CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Elizabeth Noreika, Bethany Simmons) - The recent chemical spill into the Elk River that left water contaminated for hundreds of thousands of West Virginians, was addressed Thursday at the state Capitol.
The West Virginia Senate Natural Resources Committee voted to weaken water quality standards.
The committee voted unanimously to change standards for the amount of aluminum allowed in streams.
The proposal would change the water quality standards for aluminum from a fixed standard to one that is indexed to the water's harness value.
Groups like the Sierra Club said this weakens water quality standards and water protection in the state.

(16,254 posts)I suppose they won't pay any lawsuits for great bodily damage if and when people have had sufficient exposure to permanently damage their throats/esophagus/stomachs in the future due to this tainted water? It will surely happen, as there still has to be contamination in the water and the riverbeds that will continue to cause problems.
For this company to file bankruptcy shows that they are greatly concerned that lawsuits are a good possibility and they want to wash their hands of any responsibility. That leaves the state...or, eventually, the feds.
These people make me sick. What a bunch of crooks.
