Ezra Klein, Melissa Bell, Matt Yglesias to Vox Media - and they're hiring

Early last year, Melissa Bell, Matt Yglesias and I began wrestling with a question that had bugged all of us for a long time: why hadn't the Internet made the news better at delivering crucial context alongside new information?

This year, we're founding a new publication at Vox Media in order to do something about it.

New information is not always — and perhaps not even usually — the most important information for understanding a topic. The overriding focus on the new made sense when the dominant technology was newsprint: limited space forces hard choices. You can't print a newspaper telling readers everything they need to know about the world, day after day. But you can print a newspaper telling them what they need to know about what happened on Monday. The constraint of newness was crucial.

We'll be joined by some familiar faces in this venture, including the great Dylan Matthews — and more who'll be announced in the coming weeks and months. But we're also hiring. Hey...Good Stuff ......I wish them all well! But...it's "watchful waiting" given that the FUNDERS might just be new versions of the oldies..and so it will be interesting.

I think the new "Greenwald/Froomkin, etc. Group" will turn out the Better...but, it's good to see the Competition springing up. It's a SHIFT!

2. I'm Confused. Please Help Me To Understand The Meaning Of This

Does this mean that now I will be able to turn away from offensive Huffington Post for the rest of my life and actually become intelligently informed?

3. I'd like a news organization with some of the Liberals who were banned from DK over the years. Great

writers many of them, but the 'liberal' blog didn't like popular liberal voices asking too many pertinent questions. Ezra Klein behaved himself and made sure to always 'stay on message'.

I agree that the Greenwald/Froomkin group seems far more likely not to worry too much about 'message' and focus more on facts.

Is Armstrong really involved in this project? If so, I hope he has lost his habit of posing as 'just another commenter' and has learned some better communication skills.
