Venture capitalist Tom Perkins retracted his use of the term kristallnacht to describe whats happening to the American 1% in a Bloomberg interview on Monday.
Perkins has been at the center of a growing controversy since his weekend letter in the Wall Street Journal, in which he said there were parallels between the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany and the way rich people are treated in the U.S.
The multimillionaire faced backlash in the wake of his statements and later apologized in a letter to the Anti-Defamation League. Though Perkins said kristallnacht was a terrible word to have chosen, he said he doesnt regret the message he was trying to get across.
I guess my point was that when you start to use hatred against a minority it can get out of control, Perkins said. Its absurd to demonize the rich for doing what the rich do, and getting richer by creating opportunity for others.

(47,953 posts)It's always just restating the same ignorant views with possibly less inflammatory rhetoric. The cluelessness remains.

(13,340 posts)That right there is the biggest lie of the last 30 years. Whatever opportunity is created for others is incidental. It's is a by-product, not the goal, and not even the means, necessarily. In fact, most of the rich try to MINIMIZE labor expenses (aka "opportunity" in order to MAXIMIZE profits. And as more and more jobs are eliminated by automation and outsourcing, this lie is more obvious than ever.
Right on the nose!

(9,002 posts)"It was only then that I discovered the name of the drowned man, a prominent physician from Nice, age fifty-three with a wife, a grown daughter, and a son in his late teens," Perkins wrote.
Perkins and a few others, including the captain of his yacht, were found guilty ("not at all to my surprise" but he also noted "jail sentences were suspended, and ten thousand-dollar fines assessed."
