Indiana Wal-mart Workers: "We won't freeze for freight"

Ind. Walmart workers protest freezing work conditions

"HAMMOND, Ind. - Several warehouse workers marched through a northwestern Indiana Wal-Mart store as they protested what they called freezing work conditions.

About 10 workers from the Wal-Mart Consolidation Center in Hammond were joined by about 15 supporters during Tuesday's protest, holding signs saying "We won't freeze for freight."

Workers told The Times of Munster that the warehouse operated by a Wal-Mart contractor doesn't have heating and that damaged doors allowed wind to enter as wind chills dropped to more than 20 below zero this week.

Leah Fried of Warehouse Workers for Justice says the broken doors allow in rain, snow and wind.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Dianna Gee says the retailer expects its contractors to provide a safe work environment."

Not Wal-mart's fault, of course.

Just the cost of doing business. Get back to work and pull hard on your bootstraps.

The last job I was on someone filed an anonymous complaint with OSHA about some pretty awful stuff...the kind of stuff that should've triggered an immediate audit. When they showed up they didn't even seem concerned about the violations. Mostly they seemed concerned with helping the company figure out who the rat was.

If you've got dangers at work, I wouldn't look to OSHA for help.

Maybe one day this will be halfway decent state for workers. But it will take more actions like this to make it happen.

Behind closed doors they will tell the contractor "if you can't keep your people in line and make them shut up, we'll just find another contractor". They just want the bad press to go away.
