112. Ahem... in context, 'traitor' is the correct choice.

If you're trying to make a pun, you need to flesh it out. Otherwise you risk looking less than expert in the English language, often said to be the most treacherous in the world. Several words have at least 3 different spellings and meanings although they all sound alike. Puns are my favorite form of humor but the reference MUST be clear.

123. Okay, after such an extended string of 'moran speak' on your part, I'll believe you were at least

trying to be 'humerous'. I still maintain that a single, standalone 'moran werd' will get you pegged as language deficient, especially when you spell the rong werd kerectly.

Very good of yu to grant me amnety. Or wud the bettur choice their have bin 'anmity'?

128. I figured the "ahem" would be the clue.

Especially in the context of how teabaggers are going to go ape shit hate-mail mode on someone.

Anmity has more than won spelling. I did my Masters' thesis in Tea-Speak as Are Offical Lanagage.

But what do I know. I'm having a bad run lately of being misunderstood. I received a snarky "correction" yesterday because I referred to some teabaggers as "Double Knot Spies" of the Jethro Bodine type...

excellent and irrefutable. Welcome or not, I'm now your devoted fan. Yes. I miss Jethro a lot. Like Barney Fife, he's a lot more fun as a fictional character than a real life encounter.

So not quite as risky as what Natalie Maines did. But still glad he spoke up.

I was shocked when he passed Elvis and the Beatles with most recordings sold. Impressive and under reported fact.

103. His fame pretty much makes him bulletproof in the country industry

Garth has sold a ridiculous amount of albums, enough to retire in style, which he more or less did. Meaning he doesn't have to put on an act, and can pretty much tell the wingnuts to go pound sand.

Seems like it's only the big guns in Nashville that can get away with being liberal. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw come to mind. Both are hardcore dems. Sadly, the Dixie Chicks and Steve Earle aren't quiet big enough in the genre to be openly liberal and succeed there.

It was the "We Are One" concert at the Lincoln Memorial on the Sunday before Inauguration Day, shown on HBO. He sang two or three songs backed up by a chorus of teens and 20-somethings. It was a good show!

However, I followed the concert on TV and I was present and accounted for on Inauguration Day, leaning on a flag pole on the side of the Washington Monument closest to the Capitol. experimenting with the music and had taken it into more of a rock direction. Garth came in and listened and I guess someone asked if it was too rock'n'roll and he said "Don't worry about it boys, make it sound good....the hat will take care of the rest." That cracked me up.

Not much of a fan of country music. But I am a fan of some of its luminaries. Like Garth, for example. I've met him and he is indeed a very nice and gentle-hearted man. Seemed very considerate of the people who were working with/for him when I was there.

I have always admired her ability to own a song.

Hearing that teenybopper Rimes ( sp? ) - who cut "How do I live" right out from under Yearwood - just makes my skin crawl.

She sings the chorus "How do I L-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-ve-e without yooooo." She sounds contrived and forced.

Trisha sings "how do I live without you" and just aces the loneliness of that song.

But the Korporate Kuntry stations only play Rimes version.

Good on them for being Dems, too

45. Same as Dennis Miller for me

Loved him on SNL and all his 80's and 90's work. I truly do not like him now at all, especially when he's on with Bill-o and they call each other by their last names. That sort of thing always reminds me of high school bullies.

I did like Carey in his time and I also applaud his strip club hobby.

One comedian that remained great throughout his entire career was George Carlin. I missed Bill Hicks in his time, but, boy, was he good! I learned of Hick's from Olbermann's Countdown. I hate pro sports and I wish Keith was back in his Countdown gig with a nice five year contract! America needs Keith. His work to save America from slipping into totalitarian corporate fascism, started in the beginning of this century, is not yet finished.

61. Frank Zappa's best country-western song

As sung in this version by Jimmy Carl Black, the Indian of the group. (Group= original founding member of the Mothers of Invention)

Zappa family friend Bevery DiAngelo also sang a version in the movie; "Daddy's Dead. Who's Got the will?"

My opinion of Keith is based entirely on watching his show. All his drama queen job changing since leaving MSNBC I suspect is fraught with hearsay; "insiders" offering their opinion's of Keith's ego at work. I think Keith's committment to his craft may have made him seem intolerant and egotistical. Zappa had the same commitment and many have said the same about him. Possibly because he could outwork any musician in his employ. More drive, stamina, commitment and talent. All threatening things to those of us in the mediocrity arena. Easier to blame the boss for our shortcomings.

Charlie Daniels. Uneasy Rider and Devil Went Down To Georgia are awesome, awesome songs but his ultra conservative political rants really turned me off.

Ray Stevens. I loved his novelty songs but when he veered hard into Tea Party territory and started putting out crappy political songs, I tuned him out.

Those 2 Daniel's songs are top notch. He has come out with some loony rants, I can't listen to those songs much any more because of that. He was playing up this way last summer I think. The tickets were cheap, but we didn't want to go in case he started rambling.

54. he claimed that he thought Obama

was "trying his heart out". Obama sent me a fundraising letter claiming that he was "fighting for me all the time". I tore it to pieces and mailed it back in the postage paid envelope.

And I did not put the cart before the horse. I did not say "he's worth $150 million so he must be wrong"

I said "he's wrong, and the fact that he's worth $150 million helps to explain WHY". His net worth gives him a slightly different perspective than somebody with MY income has.

Garth, unlike myself and Debs, cannot say "if there is a lower class, I am in it".

Instead, he gets quoted as part of the propaganda to convince the lower class that "Obama really WANTS to help you. He's TRYING to help you. But he can't, the system won't let him."

So, like Bill Clinton, Obama will spend the rest of his life crying all the way to the bank.

"We Shall Be Free"

This ain't comin' from no prophet

Just an ordinary man

When I close my eyes I see

The way this world shall be

When we all walk hand in hand

When the last child cries for a crust of bread

When the last man dies for just words that he said

When there's shelter over the poorest head

We shall be free

When the last thing we notice is the color of skin

And the first thing we look for is the beauty within

When the skies and the oceans are clean again

Then we shall be free

We shall be free

We shall be free

Stand straight, walk proud

'Cause we shall be free

When we're free to love anyone we choose

When this world's big enough for all different views

When we all can worship from our own kind of pew

Then we shall be free

We shall be free

We shall be free

Have a little faith

Hold out

'Cause we shall be free

And when money talks for the very last time

And nobody walks a step behind

When there's only one race and that's mankind

Then we shall be free

We shall be free

We shall be free

Stand straight, walk proud, have a little faith, hold out

We shall be free

We shall be free

We shall be free

Stand straight, have a little faith

We shall be free

147. "Carrie Underwood is a big supporter of equal marriage"

Carrie Underwood: US country queen speaks out for gay marriage – but how will conservative fans take it?

June 9, 2012
Guy Adams

She is the musical darling of American conservatives: a God-fearing farm girl from Oklahoma who became a music phenomenon on the back of wholesome hit records about faith, family and the greatness of the United States.

Until now, that is. In a development that will doubtless outrage her many fans on the religious right, the nation's most popular country singer, Carrie Underwood, has come out vehemently in favour of gay marriage.

"As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry," she said. "I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."

- snip -

"Our church is gay friendly," she said. "Above all, God wanted us to love others. It's not about setting rules, or [saying] 'everyone has to be like me'. No. We're all different. That's what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It's not up to me to judge anybody."

If I post here, "Why, just the other day, IrishAyes told me he beat his wife - said so right here in G," I would expect that other posters would demand a link.

Which I would gladly provide without being asked when I make my post about your comments.

In good faith arguments on DU, we scorn hearsay.

Stop treating the posters on this board so childishly, and either provide a link or accept that most think you are telling a tall tale no matter how emotional you get or how many smilies you employ. Your link to prove your claim will be your vindication.

145. People like you are why art gets censored.

Throughout this subthread you mention The Thunder Rolls. You say it's a song about how Garth Brooks beating his wife made her better (post 110). That's not what the song is about and your outrage is based on a poor reading or misunderstanding.

The lyrics are about a woman that shoots her husband for his cheating heart. The music video makes the woman a more sympathetic character by making the husband an abuser. I'm guessing the video does this because let's face it: shooting your husband just for cheating makes you a horrible person.

Now I'm going to guess what you heard and how you interpreted it. You heard Brooks discuss the characters in the song. The interviewer asked why the video made the husband a wife-beater. Brooks explains that making the husband an abuser turns the wife into a better character: instead of a jealous murderer she is now a victim driven to extremes and justified in shooting her husband. You interpreted this at the time or now, years later, as a statement by Brooks about husband and wives and endorsing abuse in general or about Brooks and his wife in particular. You were unable to distinguish between the character and the creator and unable to appreciate discussion about the character creation process.

This is why "just google it" and "I heard it with my own ears" and similar deflections just don't cut it. People wanted the original source of the quote to see if what you say you heard is what was actually meant.

Finally, it should be clear that since Brooks thinks being the victim of domestic abuse justifies homicide (which is a socially acceptable point of view) that Brooks does not in fact think a man beating his wife makes her better.

149. Your guess is more plausible than IrishEyes' ear-witness testimony. Furthermore (with links):

"Both TNN and CMT banned the video, with a CMT representative commentating that the network was "in business to entertain, not to promote or condone gratuitous violence or social issues". However VH1, which generally aired pop videos, began playing it and women's shelters thanked the record company for raising awareness of domestic violence. On October 2 1991, the clip was awarded the CMA Video of the Year award."

"...some women’s shelters voiced support. Brooks’ own wife at the time allegedly disapproved of scenes in the video but later defended him when the controversy drew public attention."

"Although Brooks' intentions were to promote awareness of the issue, TNN and CMT banned the video. Even with the lack of television support, his mission was accomplished, as many fundraisers were set up around the song to assist battered women’s shelters."

97. Regarding the first sentence

the one major thing I learned from my poli sci course (and trust me, there wasn't much I didn't know in this class, I didn't even crack open my text and I got an A+ thanks to my 10 yr obsession with DU, lol) was that the Canadian PM (I'm in Canada) has far, far more domestic power than does the US President. In a majority situation, there isn't much that can stop the PM, whereas the President can be completely stonewalled his entire presidency. Having said that, the President does have a 'final say' that the Canadian PM doesn't have - the veto - which means that even though he may be stonewalled - he can also do the same. Hence why the US has issues getting things done versus other countries with parliamentary systems - lots of checks and balances that slow down the process. Not always a bad thing, but it does slow things down.

I do think Obama is trying, but I'm not sure he's going about it the right way. I don't like the corporatism, specifically with the big Ag appointments. I think there is a lot of room for improvement that IS within his power. Oh, and I do like Garth Brooks, and I did like his music back in the day. 'We shall be free' has already been posted. Love that one.

The Obama presidency is not an executive branch version of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington."

Too many here think Obama is a "Hall-of-Fame worthy bullshit artist" and show that they have absolutely no clue how the political process in the United States actually operates.

120. Brooks was never a conservative icon, or if he was, conservatives weren't paying attention

He's a pretty damn good country musician (and as a bluegrass musician I have to admit liking country music), but this notion that that means he's a socially conservative neanderthal is really more our fault than theirs.

Hell, didn't he do a year-long sting as a heavy-metal alter-ego?

148. That's why I never, ever want to be President.

Nobody can pay me enough to take that job. Not only does a U.S. president regularly receive death threats, but they have to put up with people in Congress who don't want to work with them, and they have to put up with disengaged voters who equate both parties and somehow think that you're not doing enough (while not knowing of all your accomplishments thus far).
I'm only 23, but if I were President right now, I'm sure that my entire head would be gray by now, just like Obama's.
