Politico: The search for the real Hillary Clinton

What do you think of this article?

For the media, the main attraction of the so-called Clinton files – beyond inherent interest in the former president and the former Secretary of State – was the possibility the documents would yield new clues about the Hillary Clinton of the future, the one who may run for president again.

But Grunwald’s memo underscores a fundamental truth – people’s personalities don’t tend to change over time.

If she runs for president in 2016, Clinton will be running as the same person she was in 1992, and likely the same person she was before that – funny, warm and loving to her closest friends and aides, but somebody who has difficulty projecting that version of her character through the media’s lens.

There may never have been so much ink devoted to understanding a figure who’s been in the public eye for three decades, but whose inner core remains opaque to all but her close aides and confidantes.

Much of the material released by the Clinton Presidential Library focuses on specific issues or speeches by both Clintons. Hillary Clinton’s own voice makes just a few cameos in the papers, such as in transcripts about the fight for health care reform. There are dozens of pages from the UN Women’s conference in Beijing, where she commented that “women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights,” which have been the bedrock of her recent work advancing women and girls through her family’s foundation.
