Black Women are the Most Educated Group in the United States

http://shine.forharriet.com/2014/03/black-women-are-most-educated-group-in.html
<snip>

For the first time in the history of data collection by the National Center of Education Statistics as reported by the US Census, Black women have surpassed every other group in this country based upon race and gender. What does that mean? For the first time in our history, African-American women have surpassed all groups in college entrance based upon race and gender. That's right. African American women enroll in college more than Asian men, white women - you name the group, either race or gender, African American women are number one.

I actually think the article's heading is misleading - I would argue that the data shows that black women lead the pack in college enrollments at this time. Given where we're coming from, it's highly unlikely that we are the most educated group in the United States.

And it's been pointed out that therein lay a bit of hypocrisy.

If it were the other way, we'd be screaming. How can anybody be so sure?

Because it used to be the other way. And we were screaming.

But the other points are worth noting: white female enrollment leads to white female graduation. Black women have a fairly high drop-out rate. Nothing like the black male drop-out rate, of course.

5. Interesting statistic

Mar 2014

Two other sources which I found. The first shows the spread in percentages of degrees conferred by race and gender. The white spread is 12% higher for white women while the spread is 32% higher for black women.

Another important consideration is what salaries come from particular degrees. This study from Georgetown University shows that white men are concentrated in the degrees with the highest earnings. I would counsel those especially from poor and middle class families to concentrate their efforts on those degrees making the highest salaries. The payback numbers do not work when you are borrowing for a wide swath of majors. I think more regional campuses in larger urban areas that offer undergraduate engineering degrees would be a place to start. On the other hand consider some pretty good colleges in urban areas:

From 2012 http://profiles.asee.org/

Wayne State - 38 of 294 engineering graduates are black
Un of Illinois Chicago - 18 of 407 engineering graduates are black
Youngstown State - 0 of 92 engineering graduates are black

You get the idea. The university my daughter will be attending, Iowa State, is 11 out of 1013. At a Scholar's Day event we sat at the table with a very nice young black man from Chicago who is looking at Iowa State for Computer Engineering. He is also considering Mizzou and Hampton. I hope he selects Iowa State.

Isn't that one of those for-profit colleges that are being investigated for saddling students with huge loans while few graduate?

Here's a link about this very school being investigated:

Would the poster tell a lie about their spouse? ITT does have a bad reputation, but it appears it worked in her family's case. You can't find much good information about for profits out there though. A huge amount of their revenue goes back into advertising. Default rates would be a place to start with shutting down federal support for all post secondaries.

Look at what is going on at the schools on this list for example.

http://money.msn.com/college-savings/11-worst-public-university-grad-rates

Also consider data from this site.

These public colleges have higher default rates than ITT Technical and 50 or more defaults (number is % defaults in 3rd year)

are independently wealthy. If you are going to borrow the money, you have to ensure that you can pay it back as well as recognizing the opportunity cost that four years represents. If you husband leveraged a good paying degree out of ITT, then he did receive a good education. Just because you are not attending college, does not mean you cannot continue to learn if that is your choice. Take care of the basic foundation first - making yourself employable. College is not always the answer to that issue. A skilled trade is also an answer. No reason that a skilled tradesman has to suspend learning once that portion of their education is complete (or even any person for that matter). Learning requires little cost except time in today's age. Earning a credential such as a degree does have a cost.

A friend's son is currently at lineman's school. He could easily go to an engineering college, but it made a decision that is the lifestyle he wants. He took absolutely every course he could locally prior to heading off to this school. He is going to make a very good salary when he is done, and he still has the option to do something else later.

People think 18 year olds should not figure out what they are supposed to do with their lives. It is too important not to figure out early. In the past 14 year olds went off to work. It is not unreasonable to expect that 18 year olds have a clear plan where they are going and what they are doing. Plans may change because of circumstances and you can have fun along the way, but your primary goal should be to figure out what you can do to earn a salary.

I've seen numerous interviews with CEOs on TV lamenting that they cannot find people that can operate machinery, or do wiring, etc. But they CAN find loads of people with degrees in things that have nothing to do with business.
You cannot outsource heating & air repair, plumbing, electrical work, engine repair, etc. ALL of which are well paying jobs

Except that the skew in STEM fields hasn't changed much. What's happening is that there's more enrollment in "soft" fields. And because of various economic trends a tendency to stay in school--make that 4-year degree go for 5 years, head off to get a soft master's.

I also have to wonder if this includes community college enrollment and part-time enrollment. (But I don't wonder enough to check.)
