OMG: Paul Ryan's "empty soul" line plagiarized from Captain Picard?!

Paul Ryan today at CPAC

Paul Ryan: Democrats Offer Americans a ‘Full Stomach and an Empty Soul’

Mitt Romney’s old running mate rips liberals over income inequality, saying they want to hook people on welfare.

Ryan insinuated that the Democratic Party is selling the American people a welfare state. "What the left is offering people is a full stomach and an empty soul...People don't just want a life of comfort. They want a life of dignity."

Captain Picard, Star Trek, "Chain of Command (Part II)":

Meanwhile on Celtris III, Gul Madred is speaking with his daughter about whether Humans have parents. Picard is sitting in a spotlight in a red robe-like gown. Picard tries to get under Madred's skin by questioning his motives for bringing his daughter to such an installation, let alone allow her to see her father interrogating a prisoner. They banter back and forth about military power and its role in their civilizations. Madred tells his prisoner that because of the Cardassian military, his daughter will never go hungry. Picard turns this on him by saying, "Her belly may be full, but her spirit will be empty."

about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs

To-wit: If your stomach is empty - if you lack the basic requirements for survival - you won't be able to satisfy any "higher" goals. Your spirit can't be fulfilled if all you can think about is how poor, hungry and desperate you are. If you're living under a bridge and eating garbage from dumpsters it's pretty tough to hang on to your dignity.

But then, if you've spent your entire adult life being subsidized either by your well-to-do family or your cushy job in Congress, you wouldn't have a clue about how barely managing to survive crushes your spirit.

He needs to be a bit older, but man, that show was full of so many provocative ideas. And honestly, most of those ideas were fairly progressive.

I'd watch them all, all over again. Even the campy and dumb episodes. Why not.

So far he's definitely more of an original series person, but he's starting to warm to TNG. I love DS9 but that's a bit dark for him yet, he's a sensitive guy.
