Yeah... It was crucial to the defense of the United States right up until Politicians were included in the whole data collection fiasco.
I remember seeing her on Meet the Press claiming that the NSA would never abuse their power as they are "professionals" and she kept repeating that.. "But they're professionals!"

No one ever digs into that or explains it.
