Cancer Patient Who Blamed Obamacare For 'Unaffordable' Costs Will Actually Save Money

Well I'll be damned

Anyone notice how pretty much all of the Obamacare "horror stories" trumpeted by the media/Republicans have fallen apart under closer examination?

Cancer Patient Who Blamed Obamacare For 'Unaffordable' Costs Will Actually Save Money
The Huffington Post | by Ashley Alman

Americans for Prosperity, the conservative advocacy group backed by the Koch brothers, is running Obamacare attack ads featuring a cancer patient who claimed her treatments were "unaffordable" under the new health care law. On Monday, The Detroit News reported that the patient will actually save more than $1,000 a year.

Julie Boonstra says in the anti-Obamacare ad that she was diagnosed with leukemia five years ago, and her health care plan was canceled when Obamacare went into effect.

"Now, the out-of-pocket costs are so high, it's unaffordable," she said.

Before her plan was canceled, Boonstra was paying a $1,100 monthly premium. That's $13,200 a year, without adding out-of-pocket expenses like co-pays and prescription drugs. But under her new plan, the Blue Cross Premier Gold, Boonstra's premiums are down to $571 a month, and out-of-pocket costs are capped at $5,100. That's a maximum annual expense of $11,952 a year.

If their preconceived ideology conflicts with simple mathematics, Republicans will always pick their preconceived idiotic ideology.

I would think he could easily make a couple calls and get an answer on whether or not he cancer drugs would be covered.
AFAIK under the ACA insurance companies have been covering drugs for most everybody.
Also he did not go into what her previous coverage had been for drugs, nor did he mention that under her old plan there was no cap on out-of-pocket.
So whoever that apologist for the right was he was piss poor. Too bad HUFFPO didn't point that out.

Finally, did the woman in the commercial ever take out the ACA insurance? One way or another it would be interesting to see her interviewed and get her take.

Thanks for posting this.

that Ms. Cancer-Lady is acutally the wife of the local County Republican Party head.

Amazing, isn't it?

And it turns out she lied when she said that her plan wouldn't cover one of her medications. They do.

"When the newspaper informed Boonstra that it would be cheaper, she said she still didn’t believe it, adding that she still fears her costs will be unaffordable because she could be hit with large out-of-pocket bills in the early months when she wouldn’t have the money to pay. But a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan spokesman said that scenario was “highly unlikely.” He also said Boonstra’s assertion that her new plan wouldn’t cover one of her prescriptions is incorrect. The ad that featured Boonstra was sponsored by Americans for Prosperity, a group backed by billionaires Charles and David Koch that has spent more than $30 million in advertising in competitive Senate races nationwide attacking Democrats on Obamacare.
