Wow! This, IMO, may be Obama's finest action (to date):

As one who has been bitterly depressed over drone strikes and immunity for war criminals and other related issues, I am REALLY impressed with this appointment. This is BIG! and I believe it will have a tremendously positive effect on our world. Thank you Mr. President!

Obama nominates educator as next head of World Bank

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama's choice to lead the World Bank isn't the usual politician, lawyer or economist.

Jim Yong Kim, the White House's surprise nominee, is an educator, a doctor and an anthropologist who has waged a sometimes audacious campaign to improve the health of the world's poorest.

In the 1990s, defying skeptics, he found a cost-effective way to fight tuberculosis in the slums of South America. And he began a program to treat millions of Africans for HIV, that virus that causes AIDS.

Since 2009, the Korean-born Kim, 52, has been president of Dartmouth College.

"He's an outstanding choice," Jeffrey Sachs, a Columbia University economist who had been lobbying on his own behalf for the World Bank post, said in an interview.

"For the first time in the bank's history, it will have a president whose life mission is what the bank aims for: the elimination of poverty ... It's a brash decision which breaks the standard practice of going with a banker or a political insider."

They're probably frothing over his being a furriner.

2. I'm sure

a world class snob!

...who has worked on the ground with poor people around the globe, especially in Africa.

"a true friend of Africa" and "a leader who knows what it takes to address poverty."

4. Holy crap!

At first inspection.....

this looks like the kind of appointment I have fantasized about for 30 years! You know, when I'm having one of those America-wakes-up-from-it's-coma-and-does-what's-right dreams that just seem more laughable as we devolve further each day.

I'll be checking this out. Hope it all holds up. Seems too good right now to be true.

22. well, I've been highly critical, and still am, but

this is an awesome move which deserves recognition. Good or bad, I prefer to honestly express my views. I'm sure some consider me "one the usual subjects". As someone who has protested at the WB, I'm elated over this appointment.

20. I'm an Obama cynic

Mostly in the arena of unpunished Wall Street Bankster crimes.

And the entire treasonous GW Bush White House still walks free amongst us.

And there's still Goldman-Sachs alumni serving in the Obama White House, yes?

And the erosion of our Constitutional Rights, currently exemplified in the police state responses to the various Occupy Protests going on right now.

And cracking down on pot is on the wrong side of science and history in this day and age.....

So it has an aroma of giving us Progressives a bone to chew on for some hopey-changy stuff before the election.

.......On the one hand

On the other, it seems like a beautiful and magnificent appointment for a very important post. It seems to be doing what's right and just for humanity much more so than a political ploy. I like that a lot and hope more moves towards the Progressive-ism our nation needs to heal are in our near future.

The conservatives have been creating this unjust societal cluster fuck for at least the last thirty years. It's going to take the rest of us following a just and beautiful leader to restore the dreams of democracy our Founding Fathers envisioned.

This appointment is why I voted for our beautiful President four years ago. I am overjoyed to see such things.

21. It's one of the top stories in Korea this week

I live in Korea (south, otherwise I wouldn't be able to post this) and there's been a lot of coverage about it, though the story has dropped a little in favor of the liberal party sex scandal issue.

On a side note, if you want to know what sort of news people are interested in out here, you should check out Naver.com's top 10 stories of the week, as translated by Koreabeat.com. http://asiancorrespondent.com/77338/most-read-naver-com-articles-of-the-week-march-4-2011/#disqus_thread
Here's an example that had a lot of oddities:
1. A woman was arrested for tossing a bowl of hot soup into a young boy’s face at a restaurant.

2. The owner of a cafe in Gangnam was caught with a hidden camera in the women’s bathroom, which he used to photograph over 900 women.

3. More on #1.

4. A 49-year-old man who had lost his business and become estranged from his family was found dead in a goshitel room.

5. Host bars in Gangnam are getting raunchier as they branch out into the “bodobang” business formerly reserved for female prostitution.

6. A murderer was caught thanks to a recreation of the crime being broadcast on SBS.

7. The story of how two workers in restaurant/coffee shop wound up getting into an incredibly boring fight.

8. The video of an altercation between a female student and a woman in a convenience store remained on netizen radars.

9. Another altercation between a pregnant woman and an employee of a restaurant also continued to receive attention.

10. Two brothers who had been very close to each other began drinking and fighting after their grandmother died, and police had to separate them as they fought over her bank account — all 930,000 won of it.

11. MBC reporter Kim Jae-cheol was found to be using his company credit card improperly for things like expensive hotels.

12. The government is establishing some programs to help unemployed teens and those above age 40, partly through unemployment benefits of 320,000 won.

This one from last week has something about an American photographer. http://asiancorrespondent.com/77833/most-read-naver-com-articles-of-the-week-march-11-2012/
1. Henchmen of aging gangster Kim Tae-chon are accused of sexually assaulting a nurse aiding doctors treating him for pneumonia.

2. A photo by American Matthew Hoey is being used in the campaign against the naval base being built in Jeju.

3. A female university student was sexually assaulted in her apartment in Chuncheon.

4. A group of teenagers and kids launched a direct denial of service attack on the website of the Ministry Gender and Family, which has been trying to enact laws to limit how much time they can spend playing online games.

5. Despite the decreasing adult smoking rate, the number of teens and even pre-teens who smoke is on the rise.

6. An article on what it’s like at the hospital where Kim Tae-chon is being treated.

7. The approximately 1,500 members of the first graduating class of the nation’s new law schools are finding that job market doesn’t have enough openings for all of them. One mentioned in the article is driving a taxi to make ends meet.

8. In the first mention I’ve seen in the Korean media of animal hoarding, a woman in Seoul was found dead among her over 30 cats.

9. An article on passengers behaving badly on international flights.

10. An article on upcoming changes to the judicial examination system.

25. I'm glad that Rachel Maddow drew attention to this ...

this could be a real sea change. Maybe the WB will finally come close to fulfilling the purpose for which it *purportedly* exists.

Now, about the IMF ...
