U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), a leader on environmental issues in Congress, will appear alongside Nebraskans fighting the Keystone XL pipeline at a public meeting next week in Omaha.
Whitehouse will participate in a 2 p.m. meeting March 19 at Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St. He will be joined by pipeline opponent Bold Nebraska, landowners who oppose the project, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Dave Domina and Iowa state Sen. Robert Hogg (D-Cedar Rapids).
Whitehouse chairs the Senate Environment and Public Works Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee. He helped lead a recent all-night Senate session to discuss the importance of climate change.
Whitehouse also is scheduled to make public stops in Iowa City, Des Moines and Shenandoah, Iowa. In a statement, Whitehouse made it clear he is not running for president, but he wants climate change to become a top issue in the 2016 election.
