Georgia May Turn Blue and Democrat Jason Carter Leads Gov. Nathan Deal

By: Jason Easley

A new Insider Advantage poll of the state has found that Democratic candidate Jason Carter is leading Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, 41%-38%.

Insider Advantage Georgia notes that the margin is within the poll’s 4.3% margin of error, so the race is technically tied. This was the fourth time they polled this contest, and each poll has been close.

Georgia is changing. The Center For American Progress describes the demographic shifts in the state:

In the last decade, Georgia had a rapid rate of increase in its minority population, going from 37 to 44 percent minority over the time period. The increase in the minority population accounted for 81 percent of Georgia’s growth over the decade. Unusually, the biggest contributor to minority growth came from blacks, who alone accounted for 39 percent of Georgia’s growth. The next largest contributor was Hispanics, whose numbers increased at a scorching 96 percent pace and accounted for 26 percent of the state’s growth.
By 2020, along with Nevada and Maryland, Georgia is almost certain to join the ranks of majority-minority states. These ongoing shifts should continue to move Georgia in a more competitive direction.

Texas has more white Democratic support, but Georgia is expected to flip back to the Democratic column before Texas does. Anyone who looks at the demographic shift in Georgia can clearly see that the state is slipping away from the Republican Party.

I am not shocked that Jason Carter is leading in the poll against Nathan Deal. Too many Georgians are suffering under Republican government, and Jason Carter is a superb candidate.

Let's not forget that until 2002, Democrats in Georgia had held control of the state government for 125 years.

Of course, that meant with Democrats like Zell Miller, but until he lost his mind he did some good things for Georgians.

Hell, half of the current, in office republicans WERE Democrats until the republicans took control - starting with good ole' Go Fishin Sonny Perdue.

Georgia has always been a moderate state. Georgia was the last of the Deep-South states to go Republican (happened in 2002). While it's true that many of Georgia's old-school Democrats were Republicans in Democratic clothing, that's not the case now. When Georgia goes blue after the next few election cycles, Georgia will be a slightly-liberal (but always moderate) Democratic state. It's even in the state motto:

Wisdom, Justice, Moderation

Lots of Georgia politicians are still "Democrats in republican clothing" and always be.

Until we come up with a punishments that matches a candidate running as a Democrat one day, and the day after the election declares themselves a republican by switching parties, we will always have Democrats in republican clothing.

Hell, why not? How much in Democratic party money did we burn just on the last election only to have the winners "magically" declare themselves republicans within days of the election?

A fourth Democrat in the Georgia Senate has changed parties, strengthening the Republican majority and giving a boost to Sonny Perdue, the Republican governor-elect. The latest switch, by State Senator Jack Hill, gives Republicans a 30-to-26 edge over Democrats in the chamber, further reversing the Election Day results that gave Democrats a four-seat majority.

Hell, the Georgia Democrats gave away the state senate! After running as Democrats, on Democratic support and money, within DAYS of the 2002 election.

as in Florida this week. When is the party going to embrace the idea that registration and getting the vote out is everything.

Then, and only then, will Democrats win elections.

Absolutely! Our national Dems completely dropped the ball in 2010 (wasn't Debbie in charge by then?) and look what happened. TOTALLY took their eye off the ball and look what happened in the states. Now we're overrun with republi-CON governors and women's reproductive rights, voting rights, and workers' rights took a HUGE hit. Does nobody at that level understand how important it is to have Dems in control of the statehouses when it's time for another CENSUS??????? That happens every ten years and it's used to reapportion Congressional districts. HELLO!!!!! ANYBODY HOME??? THAT'S WHEN THEY GERRYMANDER. And I guess that's when our team goes to sleep.

I can't see it happening in Cherokee County where I am. This county is so totally red that it glows. There are no Democrats in office here, only Republicans.

CUMMING -- Qualifying for the May 20 primary ended Friday with no Democrats qualifying in Forsyth County. That means all the local races will be decided well ahead of the General Election in November.
