From my email ....
Dear Organic Consumer,
How do we know we're winning the war against Monsanto and Big Food?
Dozens of supermarket chains and natural health stores have declared that they wont sell GMO salmon in their stores, even if the FDA approves it.
Grocery stores, including major retail chains, are starting to voluntarily label GMO-foods, and in some cases, get rid of them altogether. Meanwhile sales of non-GMO and organic products are steadily increasing.
The Grocery Manufacturers Association, desperate to prevent state GMO labeling laws, is peddling a bill in Congress that would preempt state lawsbut no member of Congress has been willing to sponsor it.
Were winning, one battle at a time. But until we bring down Monsantos evil empire once and for all, we still have work to do. If you help us raise $200,000 by midnight, March 31, two donorsMercola.com and Dr. Bronners Magic Soapswill pitch in to match our $200,000 by donating $100,000 each. Well use that $400,000 to fight for state GMO labeling laws, and county bans on GMO crops. Can you make a donation today?
Since January 1, 2014, our Organic Consumers network has donated $165,000 to the Vermont state GMO labeling campaign, and $15,000 to the Maryland state GMO labeling campaign.
Weve also donated a total of $80,000 to campaigns to ban the growing of GMO crops in several Oregon counties.
Next week, well send the first $100,000 of our $500,000 pledge to support the November 4 state ballot initiative in Oregon, an initiative that will require mandatory labeling of foods containing GMO ingredients.
Many of you helped us raise millions of dollars for state ballot initiatives in California and Washington State, only to be disappointed when Monsanto and Big Food squeaked by with narrow wins. I was disappointed, too.
But you cant put a price on exposing Monsanto's lies and driving genetically engineered foods off the market. What you helped us accomplish in California and Washington State has cracked the foundation of Monsantos evil empire.
Now we need to finish the job.
Like you, I look forward to the day when we no longer have to raise money to fight for the basic right to know whats in our foodand the right to ban the growing of crops, and the manufacture of foods, that are poisoning our soil, air and water, and ruining our health.
Until then, were all in this together.
Every donation made by midnight, March 31, no matter how large or small, will bring us closer to our goal of $200,000and that much closer to matching funds from Mercola.com and Dr. Bronners.
Thank you!
Ronnie Cummins
National Director, Organic Consumers Association and Organic Consumers Fund
P.S. Funds donated directly to campaigns must be raised through the Organic Consumers Fund, our allied 501(c)4 lobbying arm. If you need to make a tax-deductible donation, please donate to our 501(c)3 nonprofit. Your donation will indirectly support our GMO bans and labeling laws by funding our ongoing education and media work.

(9,126 posts)Jesus Christ! The tired old argument that GMOs produce higher yields has been proven false in actual REALITY. Not only that, because the seed can't be replanted, it is even LESS efficient.
This is all about PROFITS and I shake my head whenever I see anyone defend it. If it's so great, LABEL IT and see if it flies off the shelves.
Berlum, your graphic is so correct, not only is there an explosion in allergies, but of auto immune and endocrine diseases as well as new birth defects. Big Ag in general is a DISASTER for human and animal health. That is why so many countries will not import our products.
I would write this is all caps if I could! Anyone who defends this company and it's deceptive/evil practices is stupid AND crazy!

(9,126 posts)If you read up on the subject before throwing out absolutes, you would know that Round Up Ready crops are literally saturated with the stuff. It soaks into the produce, the soil, into the fat of animals we consume, and the umbilical cords and breast milk of pregnant women which has been tested positive. It is causing chemical sensitivities as well as possibly changing the flora of the gut lining which is leading to the rise of Crohn's, IBS, and colitis. So no, it's not scientifically impossible. We're not even talking about the gene splicing somehow becoming crossing over into humans. It's leading to mineral deficiencies in the soil which is also affecting humans. Big Ag is a disaster for human health for many reasons.

(2,380 posts)And I wish I knew how to combat that thinking. It seems hopeless, but I'll try again.
1. GMOs DO NOT produce higher yields than conventionally grown crops
2. GMOs use more water than conventionally grown crops and especially organic crops
3. GMOs use more pesticides than conventionally grown crops
4. GMOs have NOT brought food prices down for consumers and only offer financial benefits to LARGE farmers
5. GMOs are a MUCH greater threat to biodiversity.
GMOS are NOT better for the environment and have done NOTHING to address food scarcity.

(34,845 posts)I would rather we didn't have to content with GMOs. I have no love for Monsanto. What I'm predicting is that when the biosphere ends up crippled by this and our other wasteful, inefficient farming practices, we may end up eating something completely artificial in order to keep the species alive.
It's just a random thought thrown into the conversation. Don't see it as a 'defense' of agricultural companies who clearly don't have our best interests at heart.

(9,126 posts)Though I know it's just a drop in the bucket compared to what those fuckers will spend. I stood there with my jaw dropping when it didn't pass in California. They threw so much money at it and there were tons of ads stating that it was bad for farmers or some shit and it would equal higher grocery bills. And dumbasses lapped it right up. Because a $.00001 sticker is so damn expensive and knowing where your ingredients come from in processed food is such a hardship?
And to anyone who gets on here shouting about Science! and Woo! you will be met with nothing but stony silence and show yourselves to be nothing other than corporate stooges. If it's so great, you eat it. With the labels, you can be sure you're getting GMO in every bite!

(9,126 posts)It's like fighting the Titans, and I wish I could help more. It is so very important. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I hope more people get involved and become aware. Because so many people are suffering from strange chronic diseases, I see a lot of awareness around the web. People with auto immune conditions, chronic pain, and strange ailments are trying to figure out what to do. The medical community, in bed with big pharma, has turned a blind eye, so people are taking charge of their health and trying to help others. That is why so many have turned to alternative medicine as well, because something is very wrong and these big companies are putting profits before health. I applaud the EU for trying to fight against it and shame on the US for actively promoting this poison so a few can profit. Just one more reason why I am disgusted with with corporatism in this country.

(9,126 posts)But tired, sick people are less likely to revolt. I remember reading a Graham Greene novel where a slave owner openly states he feeds his slaves a barely subsistence diet, purposely protein deficient, and mostly manioc so they wouldn't die but they felt sick and sluggish. Now, I'm not sure these corps are that far thinking and it is about anything more than profit and bribes, but it is certainly convenient how our current system has created a population of sick, fat, uneducated, fearful people. And for bonus points, they get to shame everyone who doesn't look like an air-brushed model for being gluttonous, fat pigs; all the while selling them processed, carb/sugar filled crap with no nutrients whatsoever. It's a win, win!

(28,979 posts)I go out of my way to avoid GMOs by researching brands online and writing the companies explaining why I will not use their products. They need to hear that their choice to adulterate our food will have consequences in the marketplace.
I have been after Kikkoman for a while now as they do not use GMO soy in any other country but ours. Why is that, I ask. They have forced me to choose an alternate brand to avoid their poison. We have to be proactive about nagging these damn companies.
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)I have been buying organic, brewed tamari for quite a while for that very reason. Will no longer eat tofu, or any soy product for that matter, and nothing with corn, wheat, canola, and now sadly yellow squash. The list is going to get longer I fear.

(19,841 posts)--we are being forced to research our food, read every label, abstain from certain foods. It's a huge headache. So irresponsible of the industry and I would call it an egregious betrayal of public trust.
I think protests and boycotts can work in the case of food. When consumers balk and don't buy...
it sends a message.
I don't use soy products but now am avoiding corn and canola when I'm not sure it's non-GMO. Those are the three big GMO crops inflicted on Americans.
----
Did you know that 80% of processed foods in your standard grocery store contain genetically modified ingredients? Most people are eating GM foods on a regular basis and are completely unaware of the fact. In the United States, 94% of soy, 88% of corn, 90% of canola, 95% of sugar beets, 25,000 acres of zucchini and yellow crook neck squash and almost all Hawaiian papaya are now genetically modified.
The environmental impact of GM crops is astonishing. According to a report by the Organic Center, genetically modified crops increased the use of herbicides by 383 million pounds in the US from 1996 to 2008. The widespread use of glyphosate herbicide used with herbicide tolerant GM corn, soybeans, canola and cotton has also led to the creation of herbicide resistant superweeds. This requires MORE herbicides to be used to do the job. I suppose this doesnt sound bad if you are the company manufacturing the herbicides.
Monsanto holds the patents on various GM products, including GM corn and RoundUp Readysoybeans. They are also the producer ofthe herbicide RoundUp. The line of RoundUp Ready products accounts for roughly half of their annual revenue. It is no surprise that their lobbying power is the driving force working against the GMO labeling laws that over 80% of the American population desires. The United States is one of the few democratic Western industrialized countries that allows GM crops to be grown, and despite public outcry GM foods are still not required to be labeled as such in the US.
Another pressing issue is the cross contamination of GM crops into traditional
crops. In Mexico, native strains of corn were found to be contaminated with GM corn being grown thousands of miles away. This is an enormous and immediate threat to biodiversity as well as to the purity of organic food standards. It also poses another serious threat to farmers. GM crops are patented and Monsanto has sued farmers where unintentional (and undesired) cross-contamination was found. The Future of Food is a very informative film that talks about these and other pressing GMO issues. The Local Grocer has a free movie lending program for this and other educational films.

(81,220 posts)I find I start losing patience for the gullible public. SURELY there's enough information around SOMEWHERE for them to realize that it just doesn't pay to trust, blindly, a corporation on anything - EXCEPT their relentless quest to make money. THAT you can trust. Trusting them on how "it's good for you!" or "taxes will go up!" or "prices will go up!" or "bad for farmers!" or "bad for veterans!" or "bad for homeowners!" or my favorite - "it'll hurt small business!" Which "small business"? The koch brothers? Yeah, the way the rules are written they can indeed claim they're a "small business" because it's just the two widdle ol' Davy and Chuckie as owners.
The ONLY thing a corporation will ever be on the level about is - they wanna make money. And when they've made money, they want to make MORE money. And then MORE beyond even that. They're not in business to help you. They're not in business to benefit you. They're not in business to ease things for you or make your life necessarily better. They're in business to make money. Period. THAT'S WHAT BUSINESS IS. That's why it's called "business" and not "charity."
People with their heads in the sand. INFURIATING sometimes!!!!!!

(9,126 posts)I thought that health-conscious Californians in the middle of some of the best farming in the world would have a clue, but I was wrong. Our education on issues comes from the wholly owned MSM and advertising. I'm suspect any time a "new" ingredient comes out that touts "it's healthy" (or endorsed by the Cancer Assoc., Heart Association, Komen or other corporate health shills) and usually find it's some industrial byproduct they are trying to sell at a premium. Like the algae compound they started putting in Horizon "Organic" milk to supposedly up the Omega-3 which is just industrial sludge and very allergenic. They shoved it in baby formula too. It's classified as organic because it starts as algae, but the processing is pure poisonous crap. Soy is another horror story and it's in everything. It's getting very hard and takes a lot of effort to try to eat right. I find so much ease when I'm in Europe because they have so many more protections against this crap.
This country is all about the money. It's so bad on so many levels.

It will take radical surgery to remove it.

Naturally, all GMO Crops, and all non naturally occurring Pesticides, Fertilizers, Herbicides, and other toxins have been forever banned from our little place in The Woods.
