McCain Compares Russia To A Gas Station

CAITLIN MACNEAL – MARCH 16, 2014, 10:32 AM EDT

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Sunday called for economic sanctions against Russia, arguing that they would be effective since its economy depends on oil and gas exports.

"Russia is a gas station masquerading as a country," he said on CNN's "State of the Union."

While McCain said that in the short term Russia has won Crimea, the U.S. can still work to help Ukraine gain that land back in the long term.

McCain said that in addition to sanctions the U.S. needs a long term military plan to help Ukraine, but not one that will lead to American troops in the region. The senator suggested aid to the Ukrainian military so "at least so they can defend themselves."

McCain On Ukraine: 'It's Not The Cold War Over Again'

CAITLIN MACNEAL – MARCH 16, 2014, 10:08 AM EDT

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) returned from a congressional trip to Ukraine over the weekend, and on Sunday he said that the situation in Ukraine will not take a turn toward traditional war any time soon.

"No boots on the ground," he said on CNN's "State of the Union." "It's not the Cold War over again." McCain also conceded that at this point, Crimea belong to Russia. "It's a done deal," he said about Crimea's referendum to join Russia."You can’t say that there’s anything but a fait accompli."

That doesn't mean that the U.S. should give up, however, he added.

McCain listed a few of the U.S. options that could help Ukraine eventually regain Crimea, including some military assistance to Ukraine and economic sanctions against Russia.

He said that the U.S. needs a "fundamental reassessment of our relationship with Vladimir Putin."

'I looked into his eyes and saw all that oil' and I knew we couldn't invade the damn place like we did Iraq. They really do have nukes. So I assessed, after seeing his soul, that we could work with him so maybe my buddies could get some of the profits'.

Actually I don't know what Bush saw when he looked at Putin's soul, but I'm sure there was oil there somewhere ...

That wasn't just about a problem between Georgia and Russia. It had everything to do with energy.

There's a pipeline that runs from the Caspian through Georgia through Turkey. And, of course, we know that the Russians control other sources of energy into Europe, which they have used from time to time.

I admire the guy for being honest from time to time, but he will probably retract anything honest and accurate he said in short order.
