Ishton Morton: Cincinnati NAACP president pleads not guilty to assault
CINCINNATI -- The president of the Cincinnati chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) pleaded not guilty to assault Wednesday after a woman accused him of trying to push her down stairs.
Ishton Morton, 67, was arrested on March 12 for the alleged incident on Jan. 16.
Morton's attorney, Christopher Finney, entered Morton's plea. Morton did not appear in court.
The woman, Tashima Taylor, 34, had argued with Morton at an NAACP meeting. She claimed Morton grabbed her and pushed her, almost causing her to fall down the rear stairs of the NAACP headquarters in the 4400 block of Reading Road.
"I have given over 6 years of dedicated service as an Executive Committee Member of the Cincinnati NAACP. The charges I filed against Mr. Morton are in response to him physically assaulting me," Taylor said in a statement. "I have a right not to be physically assaulted and as a dues paying member I have a right to attend meetings without threats of intimidation and physical violence."
