U.S. Senate leader orders probe of alleged CIA computer hacking

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/03/20/us-usa-cia-interrogations-idUSBREA2J16F20140320

(Reuters) - The leader of the U.S. Senate strongly backed the head of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday in a dispute with the Central Intelligence Agency, ordering an investigation into what he called an "indefensible" breach of the panel's computers by the CIA.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said accusations that the agency spied on the panel's computers as it investigated the use of harsh interrogation techniques during the Bush administration raised concerns about possible violations of the Constitution.

"The CIA has not only interfered with the lawful congressional oversight of its activities, but has also seemingly attempted to intimidate its overseers by subjecting them to criminal investigation," Reid said in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder obtained by Reuters.

"These developments strike at the heart of the constitutional separation of powers between the legislative and executive branches," Reid, a Nevada Democrat, added.

I was wondering what had become of this subject. Is the CIA in hot water or will this all blow over? Reid is like a tenacious bulldog, once he gets his teeth sunk into something - he won't let go.

Would they be going after the CIA if they hadn't hacked Senate and Congressional computers? I doubt it. They tend not to do much until their own oxes get gored.

Congress needs to re-assert its authority in matters of oversight of the Executive. If it happens to also involve some hypocrisy, I can live with that if the results are positive.
