Q: What can I do to help?

A: First, do not go out to the scene. The slide area remains very dangerous. Non-dispatched individuals at the scene will complicate the response efforts of the rescue crews. Red Cross is accepting monetary donations at RedCross.org or call1-800-Red-Cross. Please do not bring donation of items to Red Cross shelters.

Q: If I evacuated last night, can I go back to my house today?

A: Yes, the evacuation notice has been lifted. Please be alert and careful. Keep your phones, radios and TV nearby for possible emergency alerts about #530slide. When darkness falls, evacuation notice will be put back in place.

Q: Whom do I contact if I can’t find or haven’t heard from my loved one?

A: Look for your missing loved ones at www.safeandwell.org. You can also call the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management call center at 425-388-5088 [Call: 425-388-5088] to report your missing loved one. You may have to wait a bit for someone to answer your call, but please stay on your line. We will help you. We estimate that 18 local residents are unaccounted for, but this number will likely change as the situation evolves.

8 confirmed dead in mudslide; more than a dozen still missing


ARLINGTON — Hopes dimmed Sunday for finding survivors in the nearly one square mile of muck and debris left by a mudslide that killed at least eight people and demolished dozens of houses.

Officials confirmed eight dead during a community meeting Sunday night in Darrington. Just a few hours earlier, the death toll had stood at four.

Tod Gates, an incident commander, said that as he and other rescuers flew in a helicopter to the Darrington meeting, they spotted the four additional bodies. The dead were not identified Sunday night.

Rescue officials working off a list of 108 unaccounted for

Officials at the massive mudslide on SR 530 said this morning they have reports of 108 missing and unaccounted-for individuals as a result of the disaster.

John Pennington, who heads the county’s Department of Emergency Management, quickly added that the reports are vague and insists the number of victims will not be nearly that large. He called 108 a “soft number.”

Today’s operation at the site will include the use of aircraft, search dogs and technical teams to “probe the ground.” The search has been difficult due to the consistency of the mud, which has caused rescuers to sink. Rescuers are digging through muddy debris that is 20 feet or more deep in some areas.

Going into detail about the slide site, Pennington said there are 59 vacant lots in the slide area, and another 49 lots had some sort of structure — meaning a house, a cabin or some type of possible dwelling. Of all of the structures, 25 were likely occupied full-time. Pennington said that because the slide happened on a Saturday, more people likely were at home, not at work.....

6. You are welcome and it is. While I am not aware of friends there an, they are nearby and I've been

past there several times. I think they are pulling together the list of who has not been accounted for but might have been in the area, I also read they are trying to figure out if someone not from the area was just driving past at the wrong time and got hit too.

Of course it was logged as most everything has been out here, but I wonder when the last time was. It also makes me look at the hill we live on and other local ones as the ground is very soggy, being spring and all after a couple hard freezes last winter.

It seems a real mess, with the mud being so deep making it difficult to get out into it to search.

7. That's just what we're doing, uppity. Looking at the hills...

we're only a mile from the Skagit River, and the road down on the south side of it sloughs away practically every year when the rains are exceptional, due to slides. If Iron Mt. ever came totally down, we'd be gone, as many many other folk are just now realizing this weekend. Of course, if Baker went off, the entire valley most likely would be decimated, so living with the "ifs" is something that most of us are used to.

This has been so sad, the families haven't much hope to hold to, at this point.

8. When we moved on our place I noticed a couple bent trees which gave me pause. Only a couple though

and in only 1 place. What with WA being glaciated not that long ago, not a lot of soil on top of the hard clay, with pretty much everywhere being logged at some point and with the freeze, thaw, rain of typical late winter, spring, surprised we don't have more slides. I have rolled my eyes seeing warnings about slides on NWS, thinking only in the cities but this was rather something much.

Seeing the steep hills logged has always left a bad taste for me, thinking how easily they could slide without the trees and vegetation.

And indeed, so sad, not much hope left for those in the muck.
