But in the sense of being hermetically closed. You can't see inside of it. All you can do if feed data into it, and extract data out of it.

There's one a couple of blocks from my house. One way traffic on either side of a strip of grass with walking and bike paths. It goes for blocks and blocks. There are numerous other parkways in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Most are in residential neighborhoods and are major arterial streets.

We walk our dogs in the park strip of the parkway near our home. It's great. There are benches, trash containers and everything you'd find in a park. They're just long, skinny parks. Hence the name.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_State_Parkway

The Garden State Parkway (GSP) is a 172.4-mile (277-km) limited-access toll parkway that stretches the length of New Jersey from the New York line at Montvale, New Jersey, to Cape May at New Jersey's southernmost tip. Its name refers to New Jersey's nickname, the "Garden State." Most New Jersey residents refer to it as simply "the Parkway" or "the Garden State". The Parkway's official, but unsigned, designation is Route 444. At its north end, the Parkway becomes the Garden State Parkway Connector, a component of the New York State Thruway system that connects to the Thruway mainline in Ramapo. The Parkway has been ranked as the busiest toll highway in the country based on the number of toll transactions. The parkway is the longest highway in the state.

secret high-tech gadget.

There were a lot of 'black boxes' on board the M1 Abrams tanks I crewed in the Army. They were usually painted white, actually, to blend in with the other hardware mounted on the inside of the tank. Access to these components was restricted to depot technicians with computers.

The color of the 'box' is immaterial. The term is meant to convey secrecy, and sometimes sinister purpose.

There is a really good book called "To Engineer is Human", which explains the trade-offs between functionality, design, and cost.
i have also read that airlines used to (or maybe still do!) compare cost of making safety tweaks against how much they would lose if an airplane went down.

Why do/did drive-up ATMs have a braille keypad?

How come a dime, which is worth more than a nickel and a penny, is smaller than both?

Why are they "hot dogs" if they're not made from dogs?

There are "key limes" in it, because they were first grown in the Keys

Because they make all the ATMs at one factory and they don't know what kind of installation it's going to at the time it's made. Even if they did, blind people take taxis or bum rides to drive-up ATMs. Even if they didn't, the ADA would mandate it.

Because originally the dime was silver while the penny was copper and the nickel was -- wait for it -- nickel.

Because of anti-German rumors before WWI implying that sausagemakers used dog meat.

Why do/did drive-up ATMs have a braille keypad?

The reason for this is so simple that it's nonsensical. There are two reasons.

1.) It's cheaper and easier to make one die-set of keys rather than two...so all the keys whether for a drive-through or walk-up ATM are identical. That is, they all have braille.

2.) Several states have laws that specify that all ATMs have braille key-pads and audio-ports for blind-assistance devices. (aka. headphones) Since it doesn't make a difference as ATM manufacturers wouldn't produce ATMs for drive-throughs without braille keypads even if they could legally, there is no impetus to change the law.

It's also just a generic term for a compartmented piece of technology (some circuit diagrams label internal integrated circuits as "black box" meaning roughly "don't worry about what this does because it doesn't affect your circuitry&quot .
