plenty of other people were saying similar things much earlier than he was.

Barry Commoner "The Closing Circle" 1971
EF Schumacher "Small is beautiful" 1973
Paul Wachtel "The Poverty of Affluence" 1989
Erich Fromm "The Sane Society" 1955
R H Tawney "The Acquisitive Society" 1920
Paul Goodman "Growing up absurd" 1960

and so on.

And for just memorably off-the-wall humor with no particular political content, Gary Larson & the Far Side.

like the killer monster snow goons.

Once he was making a bunch of snowmen and Hobbes asked him what he was doing. He said "I am making effigies of all the people I hate, so I can watch them melt in the sun."
"The ones I really hate, I make small, so they will melt faster"
Hobbes looks around and says
"I didn't know you even KNEW this many people."

Very special to walk past so many originals including the last one published.
He doesnt let loose of those, much like Gary Larson, who had many originals at Steinhart/Cal Acad back when.
Any strays would bring truly insane prices on the open market.

Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes" was the best strip since Walt Kelly's "Pogo." Oops! I just gave away what an old fart I am... Whatever. I still miss Calvin and Hobbes."
