Man dies defending daughter during alleged hate crime

A Chicago man was killed Wednesday while protecting his only daughter during an alleged hate crime.

Fifty-nine-year-old Michael Tingling was walking his 15-year-old daughter, Masharah, home from school around 2 p.m. when he noticed Joseph Firek, 59, making inappropriate gestures towards her, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Firek approached the girl, Tingling stepped in and a fight ensued.

“He was staring at me up and down, eyeballing me,” Masharah said to NBC Chicago. “My dad, being a father, he got protective and put me behind him and told the guy to go away.”

During the altercation, Firek allegedly punched Tingling, who has a pacemaker, in the chest, causing him to go into cardiac arrest, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Firek allegedly used racial slurs while hitting Masharah’s father.

However, this case was actually about a 15yo girl not being able to walk the streets without being harassed. It doesn't say the comments/actions directed toward her were racist, though they may have been. What it appears to be is another sleazoid thinking he was the shit and 15yo girl would think he was the same.

I didn't see anything indicating the initial "contact" was because of her race, though certainly a possibility. It sounded as if she was being "propositioned." Some have a negative association with the promiscuousness of minority women. The fact that the man used racial slurs in his attack on the father would indicate he is probably a racist.

I meant to say some see minority women as promiscuous simply because they are a minority. It is a nasty stereotype which actually afflicts both sexes in minority groups, though historically, black men are usually the target of that particular stereotype.

It should read: some associate minority women with being promiscuous because they are a minority. It is that age-old stereotype of white = chaste, and non-white = hedonistic. Someone else brought up that the girl was approached because she was black and I was saying it is possible because of nasty stereotypes about the supposed promiscuity of minorities.

36. And what's so funny about that stereotype is that black girls/women are some of the most chaste

and damn near puritanical people I know. A man has to declare undying devotion before they even THINK about going there with him. The few (and I mean the VERY few) anomalies to this that I've known in my many years have been viewed (often unfairly) as unsavory aberrations.

But perhaps this was all in response to the "non-white = promiscuous" theme. Over compensation.

I would alter my post but inevitably someone would scream I was trying to get around the rules by editing a post I know was juried (since it can't be juried again).

the really sad thing about this is that this IS very tolerant, integrated neighborhood.
