Have you noticed....

How when the current TV shows depict crime solving they are using blatant aggressive force to get suspects to talk?

I am not a big fan of the crime solver shows, in fact I couldn't give you a full proper name of one. My husband likes this sort of show and I usually am in the vicinity of the TV in the evening. Last night I could not count the number of times a suspects head was bashed into a table, force was used when the suspect was seemingly under the control of the authorities or private information was researched at the flick of a finger. These shows are normalizing brutality from the forces that be.

Post 'Patriot Act' prime time is a training ground for what to expect when in custody. It looks pretty grim. I realize this is TV...but I am not naive enough to think that they are not molding my mind to accepted societal practices.

Be safe out there!

I think the police have been brutal for a long time and many of us already know this.

but the folks at home are not as aware, for what ever reason. Watching the brutality on TV from pretend law enforcement officers normalizes that behavior for the un-thinkers at home!

I watched the first three or four hours of the first of the 24 series, and then simply couldn't tolerate the lunacy and fantasy levels of that show.

The scary thing is that a lot of people think that these shows are essentially documentaries. Not only does too much Fox news make you stupid, but too much of most commercial TV makes you stupid.

How many times during a cop show, does the hero draw his weapon?

From the NYT: "In 2009, the NYPD responded to 4.4 million radio-received assignments. Of those, 206,000 calls involved weapons of some kind. Despite those massive numbers, there were only 47 cases in which an officer intentionally fired a gun in a conflict."

Cop shows do have an effect on the public. I read about a case where the police arrested a car thief driving a stolen vehicle. In the trial, the jury seemed concerned that the police hadn't finger printed the car to prove he had stolen it (he was driving it). The jury referenced the type of police science used in CSI and wondered why the police didn't collect enough evidence. The prosecutor was astounded and the thief was acquitted.

Do I blame fiction? No, we need better educated citizens.

I would suggest "Elementary". They don't do that.

"Blue Bloods" keeps it to a minimum and addresses the moral questions behind it within the show.

"Criminal Minds" doesn't do it either.

I am not a big fan of this kind of show either, but there are a few decent ones out there.

is also accessed on these shows. They get your bank accounts, work history, etc. Almost immediately, as well. Criminal Minds is the worst offender. Almost funny.

It would be funny if it weren't so creepy! The average Joe is being trained that he has no right to privacy, an attorney or personal safety while in custody. ....Head shakes.....

who owns what is called the so called entertainment media or networks. And the answer is six mega wealthy people and their goal is to keep the populaces divided and angry at one another. Election year so called entertainment designed to make people vote against their best interests.

Wake up people, get your heads out of your butts and I-phones. There isn't a middle class anymore. It's the top 10% and then the rest of us working folks the 90% one paycheck from being shit out of luck.

Don't know about other DUers,I'am seeing more and more homeless families. Is this just a Southwestern thing or is there something else we are not seeing or this more of corporate Americas organized population dislocation program.

Double and triple stacking the household has been common for years. Young people living with their parents, grandchildren living with Grandma. And then there are those living under the bridge that we have to look to see.

The inability to get a job that is secure and has growth is the final nail in the coffin.

The flagrant bashing of suspects in these TV shows is training us up for what to expect should we be down and out or on the wrong side of the table.

a few retired police officers revisiting old unsolved cases.

it's not violence-free, but I don't think they ever use direct violence to coerce confessions or evidence. they do pressure people by threatening to make their life miserable, though, usually by threatening to shut down their business for a few days or make public something embarrassing.
