Duck Dynasty star: Gays are going to hell is ‘what the Bible says’

Willie Robertson, star of the reality television series Duck Dynasty, has defended anti-LGBT comments made by his father, agreeing gay and lesbian people are sinners who will not go to heaven because the Bible is literal.

In a recent interview, CNN’s Kyra Phillips asked Willie Robertson to “clear the air” about comments his father, Phil Robertson, had made last year.

The patriarch of A&E’s hit show had opined at the time that “a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus.”

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there,” was his explanation of sin to GQ magazine. “Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.”

Phil Robertson added: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

Willie Robertson did not repudiate his father remarks in the interview that was aired on Wednesday, but accused GQ magazine of having an agenda.

It says, "anything in the water that hath not fins nor scales, that shall be an abomination unto you." This means that not only are shellfish prohibited, but crustaceans like crawdads, lobsters and crabs, and also catfish.

I used to pass a Pentecostal church every morning on my way to work. One fine day this was on the church sign:

'Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is abomination.' - Lev. 18.22

Oyster Roast - Sunday

The problem with this sign is, the same book of the Bible that tells you not to screw other men also tells you not to eat oysters. And to me, the part about oysters was more important than the part about screwing men. Here's why:

Go through Leviticus 18 and you'll notice one common thread: all the sex acts they don't want you doing are ones that won't make healthy Levite babies. We know fucking your relatives leads to all your less-than-pleasant recessive traits becoming dominant. We know fucking other guys' wives leads to their husbands sending very large men to your house to cut off your dick and then your head. And we know gay sex doesn't lead to pregnancy. But here's the thing: You have six wives. You got all of them pregnant. Women can only maintain one pregnancy at a time. Until one of your wives has her child and is ready to get pregnant again, you can have all the gay sex you want and not affect the production of Levites one whit.

Understanding the oyster prohibition requires knowing about the three forms of shellfish poisoning - neurotoxic, paralytic and amnesic. They come from microorganisms in the water and they can be lethal. I am certain the doctors back then saw lots of this and learned that the people presenting with it had all eaten clams or oysters. They didn't have marine biologists in biblical times to track the red tides. They did know that if they put "this is abomination" in the laws, people would stop eating shellfish and the problem would be solved. That is what they did.

So...no gay sex because you need to reserve your dick for making babies...or no shellfish because they might kill you. Which is more important?

Primitive societies often had high infant mortality rates, so a high birthrate was essential to perpetuate the social unit.

Hence the need for plural marriage - if a guy had several strong, healthy children The Village would marry him to more women. What would be the point of wasting a fertile woman by letting her marry an infertile man?

Today we have a different problem: too many people. You need new children to replace the adults who die, but when you've got the quiverfulls out there cranking out their own football teams (in three kids the Duggar family will be able to play touch football with full 11-man formations at family reunions) it's like we should almost be encouraging gay marriage to help keep the population reasonable.

However, I do hate it when Christians quote Leviticus and Deuteronomy on why someone is going to hell when those laws do not apply to them. Unless they are a Jew who converted to Christianity then they do. I do believe there are other mentions of homosexuality in the New Testament but I am not fluent on them.

Is there are only a couple references of Homosexuality in the Bible but over 3 thousand references to adultery. I am pretty sure God is more concerned with people who cheat on their spouses over people who are gay.

But the Bible says an awful lot of things that are false, hateful, self-contradictory, impossible and just flat out insane.

Using it as evidence that your own biases are valid says more about you than the objects of your bias.

The right wing will come out to defend him about the homosexuality issue come hell or high water.

I think it becomes harder for them to defend him on a statement that shows utter ignorance about what was going on in the south at that time. Even if he claims he never heard his neighbors complain about their lot in life there's no way he was ignorant about what was going on in his general neck of the woods and why his neighbors may possibly be inclined to keep their opinions to themselves.

The average person goes to church every Sunday and sits fidgeting and yawning for an hour between looking at their watch and breathe a sigh of relief when it's over and they can pursue life. Now, how much sense does it make to go to church and suffer so that you can ensure an eternity of fidgeting and yawning?

Note: I'm paraphrasing one of Twain's observations about heaven.
