This is a Bios Urn, a completely biodegradable urn that contains a single tree seed. When planted, the tree seed is nourished by and absorbs the nutrients from the ashes. The urn itself is made from coconut shell and contains compacted peat and cellulose. The ashes are mixed with this, and the seed placed inside. You can even choose which type of tree you'd like to grow!

(53,661 posts)My desire was to be buried in an old growth wilderness area and get back to my roots. Since my teens, I wanted to do the wild animal routine, but loved ones seem determined to have a place to go and discuss the matter of my death. We don't get much say about such things afterward, LOL.

(1,665 posts)I met an almond farmer once, and he kept telling me about his amond groves. Amond this, amond that. How he loved amonds. How his family had been in amonds for generations. He kept talking about all the uses of amonds--amond paste, amond candy, roasted amonds. He was a bank of amond trivia.
I thought he just had a funny accent, until he explained how the nuts are harvested.
It turns out when the nuts are ready, to fall from the trees.............
you just shake the "l" out of them.

(16,161 posts)a tree as beautiful as me.
This makes a whole lot more sense than being spread over the oceans or put in the cold dark dirt in toto.
I think I want to be a Sequoia.
don't get me wrong about being scattered about, but I've been that way all my life and want to put down some deep roots.

(46,179 posts)it's probably not likely that all those seeds will sprout and survive to adult tree hood.
Still, it's a good idea. Instead of cemeteries, we could have managed forests grown out of the 7+billion humans that are going to die and have to be processed in some way.
It would be a second choice for me; I'd rather my ashes be scattered on the wind, to spread out across the world and leave no trace of me behind for others to analyze and study.

(31,893 posts)I've already made my post-death wishes known to my family. Cremate the body I've left behind, dig a hole in a location of their choosing, dump the ashes in, and set a Norway Pine seedling into the hole.
I'll of course leave a bequest to cover the cost of obtaining a Norway Pine seedling.

(12,629 posts)My daughter and son-in-law recently mentioned wanting to do something special with their twin daughters' ashes.
This would be a lovely gesture. Picking the best location might be difficult, as they would want to watch the tree grow.

(21,020 posts)of a pencil isn't an easy one, though...
Every so often you're stuck into a small machine that will eventually grind you down to a tiny nub.
And imagine the indignity of belonging to a kid...putting teeth marks up and down your length. Biting on your ass (the eraser) and even using your ass to clean wax out of his ears. Or up his nose with your other pencil self to create a goofy face for his classmates.
Some pencils go to artists...
Some go to ten year old boys...

(51,076 posts)cremate my stinking ass then pick a spot and dig a hole put the ashes in and plant a sycamore tree in the hole and cover it all up. I'll need a place for my spirit to rest in the after life and a sycamore is a fast growing and pretty tree so It'll give me that limb to sit on and rest.
seriously that is my instruction to my family.

Sorry but I don't believe in heaven and hell but I do feel I've lived before and will live again. I had these feelings long before I was old enough to know about the bible and all that. I can remember back to within days of when I was born. Google it and there are others who are like me who can remember all the way back to birth

(51,076 posts)I liked it so well that I gave instructions to my family as to what to do with me when I do die. I like the thought that maybe my ashes could help to nurture a tree, especially a Sycamore tree. Just something about a Sycamore tree that I like and always have. May have something to do with the fact they stand out in a hard wood forest.
The thought that anyone would want to put my body in a box and bury it does not appeal to me at all. Taking up a space of about 3 feet by 6 feet for a long time to me is wrong.

(9,463 posts)...and we buried her in our private family cemetery. The cemetery is in a forest in eastern N. Carolina and mom's instructions for when she was gone was always to be buried beneath the lowest branch of a tree that has matured beside the resting place of her father, whom I never knew because he died when I was very young. Back when grandpa died, the aforementioned tree wasn't much more than a yearling, but has grown into a mighty hickory. Mom needed to be cremated, to make it happen as she wished, due to room.
I personally dug the hole myself and placed her urn among the roots of that tree. It was an honor to do so and, though mom is not in direct contact with that tree, I like to think that she shines through it's leaves and branches.
