Departing Port Authority Chairman David Samson doesnt need to hire a $650-an-hour lawyer to exonerate him.
It boils down to this: Allies like Samson, who may very well have an important role raising money and providing counsel in the future, are defended and venerated as pillars of rectitude. Those who threaten the governors ambitions, like David Wildstein, the former Port Authority appointee who ordered the lane closings, or Bridget Anne Kelly, Christies former deputy chief of staff, whose Aug. 13 email sent the scheme in motion, are vilified as unstable, crazy and untrustworthy.
He depicted Samson as valiant old warhorse, who wanted to step down a year ago but stayed on at the behest of his governor a model public servant, in other words.
Never mind that his departure comes as federal prosecutors are examining the overlapping relationship between his law firm, Wolff Samson, and lucrative Port Authority projects.
Never mind that Samson refused to be interviewed by the elite New York lawyer Randy Mastro and his team of ex-federal prosecutors who compiled the purportedly exhaustive report on the lane closings, even though Samson emerged as a central figure in the incident. In this case, hes playing in traffic, made a big mistake, Samson fumed in a Sept. 18 email, referring to the Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye, who put a stop to the mysterious lane closings.
Christie didnt see any reason why Samson should meet with the investigators.

that there hasn't been an attorney ethics investigation opened here. I'm surprised they didn't hire Wolff & Samson to do the investigation. There are so many holes in this investigation, I can't believe Christie feels comfortable waving it around as a sign of his vindication. Thanks for posting. There's one reporter who isn't buying what Christie's selling. Quod Est In Loco!
