That was leeches, sacrificing animals to god, and (the one thing that worked) drinking a tea of poppy heads steeped in wine.

He'd have to get past the DEA on that last one. They allow people to grow poppies in the garden but not to be in possession of "poppy straw." No clue what gardeners are supposed to do with it since even composting takes time.
