At least they could *try*

Last edited Mon Mar 31, 2014, 11:00 AM - Edit history (1)

Today I received 2 separate emails from the Democratic Party asking me for cash. That makes 19 in the past two weeks.

I took a quick look through the 19, and not one of them says what the Democratic Party will be doing to help the 99%. Most just ask for money. Some tell me that they need money or else -- Republicans may repeal ObamaCare, or take over Congress. And there's a couple that want me to enter a sweepstakes for a trip to see LBJ in NYC with Biden, I think.

What would be so awful about setting some positive goals and fighting like mother@#$%ers to achieve 'em for the 99%? That's how we take back the House and keep the Senate, by fighting and winning battles for the 99%, not by sweepstakes and pointing out that the other guys are worse.

I know, I suck for saying this. But I can't imagine that I'm the only one who feels this way.

Update Let me be crystal clear here: I'm highly in favor in fundraising, and in contributing - I give to candidates, including Elizabeth Warren (of course) and Barack Obama. What I'm against is playing defense instead of offense, of selling a political party like this:

Mar 2014

Friend -- The 2014 election boils down to one question: Whose side do you stand on?

Do you stand with Democratic control of the Senate -- or do you want to hand the gavel over to Mitch McConnell? Do you stand with President Obama’s agenda to fight for working families – or do you want two more years of unbearable gridlock?

Let’s do the math: Right now, nine 2014 Senate races are within single digits. NINE. And Republicans only need to win six to take control of the Senate.

So we have a choice: We can either sit back and let the millionaires and billionaires and big corporations take control, or we can stand for working people and fight back.

I can’t overstate how important it is for us to raise $900,000 more for Democratic Senate candidates across the country. Our deadline is in 72 hours -- can you pitch in $3 right away? Your gift will be matched.

Karl Rove and the Koch brothers are trying to buy a Senate that is rigged in favor of the rich and powerful. They just spent another $30 million in attack ads, and they are just getting started.

If we let that happen, you’d better believe that everything President Obama fights for will be brought to a screeching halt. Democrats need to hang on to the Senate so that we can fight for middle class families and so that we can work to give everyone a fighting chance to build a future.

But I also know that when we stand up and fight, we can beat the most powerful interests. We did it in Massachusetts in 2012, and we can still do it in states all across the country in 2014.

Things are too close to sit back and watch from the sidelines. Will you join me and fight back?

Please join me and pitch in $3 before the deadline in just 72 hours. Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling its imapct.

Thank you,
Elizabeth Warren

I have no idea why Jeff Merkley, for instance, writes to me three times a week. I live in Illinois, and have been to Oregon only twice in my lifetime.

I have made donations to (or in the case of OFA, worked for) a couple of these groups in the past: I think they sell or share their email lists and it just starts to grow geometrically. It makes me nuts.

And as for Manny's request that they say something more important in their emails: it doesn't matter. They just want your donation. They'll be happy to say anything that gets you to press the donate button, but it doesn't mean anything.

(I'd rather they told me exactly how their money will be spent--say, hiring staff or paying rent on a campaign office; but I've given up on that. I know they think they get more results from scream headlines about Republicans.)

I’m not going to sugarcoat things – it’s go time in New Hampshire. Scott Brown and his special interest pals are on the attack, so my friend Jeanne Shaheen needs our help now.

Brown’s got his whole shtick – the pickup truck, the “I’m an everyman” message. But as anyone who watched his 2012 campaign against Elizabeth Warren knows, he only cares about three things: Big Oil, Big Banks, and – most of all – Scott Brown.

He will be the best-funded candidate in New Hampshire history.

The Koch brothers and right-wing Super PACs have already spent almost $1.5 million attacking Jeanne this year. The second Brown announced, Karl Rove’s American Crossroads launched a $650,000 attack ad buy.

Jeanne needs our help immediately to fight back against the Super PACs. With just 39 hours before the midnight FEC deadline, Jeanne has $153,290 left to raise. I need you to pitch in right now.

Donate what you can spare to Jeanne right away – we can’t let Big Oil and the big banks buy Scott Brown another Senate seat.

Now that Brown’s in, the right-wing Super PAC cash that’s already gushing into New Hampshire will double or even triple. In 2012, Brown took $5.5 million from Wall Street and big financial interests alone – more than anyone else running for Congress that year. I shudder to think what they have planned for Jeanne.

Let’s not wait to find out. Please contribute now, before the books close on this critical FEC quarter, so that Jeanne has the resources to fight back and help hold our Democratic majority.

Donate what you can spare to Jeanne right away – we can’t let our middle-class champion be replaced by special-interest darling Scott Brown.

Thanks for standing with Jeanne.

We need your help to help retain the Senate in Democratic control so that the president can have federal judges pass through the nomination process and to place justices on the Supreme Court if vacancies occur. These changes will help to overturn bad decisions such as the Citizens United ruling, promote equality and repeal laws that do not promote progressive principles.

That isn't a comprehensive list, but it should serve as a start. I'm certain that some others will want to add to that list.

I have so many charitable solicitations, religious and non-religious. At least they send me address labels, calendars, note paper or greeting cards, etc. and I send a small donation if I'm going to use the "gift".

I've assumed I can't get off the political lists, since I'm a registered Dem. and that's public information, so I just delete the political requests.

Who else are you going to vote for? Come election time we are going to vote for the Democrats, don't matter what the democrats do or don't do republicans suck. I unsubscribed from everyone except Elizabeth, Udall and Bernie.

You're on a roll here. I got similar emails, including ones from Elizabeth Warren and Dean. All were asking for money to help maintain control of the Senate and try to get control of the House.

I donated what I could. You got annoyed. That appears to be a major difference between us. I'm working on and contributing to efforts to put Democrats in charge. You're deleting requests for donations that will help to do that and trashing those requests on a website called Democratic Underground.

Great job, Manny! Please proceed.

Sincerely,

I suppose the annoyed folks could use the "unsubscribe" link most of those emails have, but that would take far more effort than coming to DU and complaining.

I don't object to being asked to contribute. I don't mind contributing either. I even gave to Obama in 2008, based on what he said he was going to do.

What I do mind is a campaign that asks me to contribute without even attempting to say "Hey! We're going to do X" and then going off and fighting like Hell for X. C'mon Democrats: play offense.

get control of the Senate, Manny? I deal with the future, and always have.

How do you think they'll go if we can get control of both houses of Congress? That's why I'm donating to specific Democrats who have a chance to pick up a House seat from the Republicans.

I'm sowing election activism. You're sowing pessimism. Which do you think will have the better effect?

All the best,

75. You're expecting 50 years of Republican work to be reversed in 5.

Mar 2014

The Republicans have been working at this since Goldwater lost. You're pissed Democrats did not undo that work in 5 years.

Yes, your expectations are unreasonable.

And you will be disappointed by the next Democratic president. And the one after that. By the one after that, we will have started making decent headway, but you'll still find something to be disappointed about.

It's a logical fallacy.

It happens all the time on online discussion forums. Instead of commenting on the substance of the post, people will attack the poster.

I said what I'm doing instead of complaining about donation requests. I did comment on the poster's post. You just didn't like my comments. As for going after the poster, the poster said what he said. I replied. That's how discussion works. I explained how I handle those donation requests. That's addressing the content of the post. I even started my own OP, which you might enjoy reading.

All are about the content of the post, which cannot be separated from the poster who made it.

76. Because the poster vomits forth the same content with every post.
Mon Mar 31, 2014, 12:21 PM
Mar 2014

And taking apart his argument in past posts does not result in any differences in the next post.

The poster is pissed that Democrats have not reversed everything the Republicans have worked on for the last 50 years. In 5 years. With a 1-vote margin, at best.

Point this out, or otherwise remind this poster about what has been accomplished, and it does nothing. You just get another angry "why didn't Democrats change everything?!!!" post the next day.

As a result, it becomes abundantly clear that the poster is not at all interested in discussing the subject. He's interested in being pissed off. The content of the posts doesn't matter, he just wants to be mad. So there's no point in discussing the content.

you, on the other hand dont appear to question murky and wrongheaded policy.

Nope, I do evil things like point out we did not have the votes to pass the correct policy. For example, we did not have enough votes to pass single-payer. Then I go on to talk about how we can use the ACA to get the correct policy.

At which point, someone like you attacks, claiming that Obama could have gotten the votes somehow.

which is the act of divisiveness, and which the act of grassroots solidarity?

Well, setting expectations in the stratosphere and then spending 5 years bitching that they were not reached is rather devastating to a community.

And constantly attacking the wrong target is also quite unhelpful - demanding that the President pass laws and then getting angry when he isn't a dictator is also quite devastating to a community.

But hey, you know that, right? You're only interested in building community, not just throwing out insults like "Obama worshiper". Because that would be rather damaging to the community too.

Oh wait....

AUTOMATED MESSAGE: Results of your Jury Service

Mail Message
On Mon Mar 31, 2014, 09:02 AM an alert was sent on the following post:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024757040

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

This post is baseless criticism of the Democratic Party. The poster knows very well what the Democratic Parity is doing to try to help the 99%. Him saying otherwise is just not believable. The party relies on a large number of small donations. This post is disruptive at the least, disenfranchising at the worse.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Mar 31, 2014, 09:05 AM, and the Jury voted 1-5 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I just found out that we can rec the alerted post while on jury duty. Cool.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This has to be one of the WORST alerts I have ever seen. I wish DU could/would revoke the ability for some people to alert and waste 6 other people's time.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I suggest that the person who wrote the OP unsubscribe from unwanted e-mails and stop trying to discourage other, authentic, Democrats from supporting the party. Some of us around here are still actually interested in electing Dems.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: alert abusers should face remedy.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

Most of them saying the same dire warnings and as you say nothing positive about what they plan only how they have to fight to defeat the other guys. I have begun to systematically unsubscribe to most of them and stating as my reason too many begging emails a day. But if I sign a petition, or donate to one candidate, the mails start up all over again even if I select when given the option not to receive mails. OR i stop receiving mail from one senator and another starts . . . that alone is starting to turn me off to their requests .
