ARLINGTON, Wash. Heavy rains lightened today, helping crews progress in their search for victims in the 530 landslide. Approximately 620 personnel, including 160 volunteers, are working the slide area from both sides.
Today the Snohomish County Medical Examiners (MEs) office reported 21 confirmed fatalities. Of those, 15 have been identified and six are awaiting identification. Crews have located an additional four victims in the slide.
A service road opened yesterday, March 29, to help responders access the entire slide area, and move personnel, food and equipment from one side of the slide to the other. These operations are maxing out the roads capacity. The road is not open to the public.
Crews are continuing to remove memorabilia and personal items from the debris field. As these items are being removed, they are placed in plastic bags and taken off-site for decontamination. The Snohomish County Sheriffs Office will coordinate with victims families to return the items.
Crews have also cleared approximately 450 feet of the total 6,000 feet of SR 530 buried beneath mud and debris. Satellite lidar scans of the debris field show debris that ranges in height from 15 to 75 feet.
Forecasts this week show a continued drying trend, which will help crews and reduce the risk of flooding and additional slides.
