(17,817 posts)While this might be a cute analogy to explain why some people behave the way they do, most human beings are little bit more intelligent -- and a lot more inquisitive -- than monkeys. That's why we actually make some progress, albeit not necessarily as rapid progress as some would like. We do question the status quo. We do ask why everyone is beating up on the poor monkey on the ladder.
What would be a much more accurate analogy would be that the third or fourth or fifth monkey, curious as to what prompted the beatings, sneaks up to grab the banana. When NOTHING HAPPENS TO HIM, he asks the others what the hell they were so afraid of. Of course, then they might beat him up for pointing out how stupid and ignorant they've been, how gullible and how suckered. That's pretty much what happens here on DU to anyone who speaks out . . . . but only when they actually speak out.
