Could Hoover's brother been elected in 1940?

I admit to not even knowing if Hoover had a brother much less one that had been a governor but I think he could have had a brother who cured cancer and engendered world peace and he still wouldn't have been considered seriously for the Presidency in 1940. Yet we might well be on the cusp of seeing Jeb Bush nominated by the GOP just 8 years after Bush pulled a Hoover on the economy and the worst foreign policy ever. I can't fathom how this is remotely possible.

By 1912, William Howard Taft had become so unpopular that he went down in history as being the only major party candidate (Republican) to get fewer votes than a 3rd party candidate (Theodore Roosevelt) in a presidential election. Yet in 1920, the Republicans were swept back into the White House.

and Wilson. The Republicans still had an overwhelming majority of the country on their side but had their votes split in both 12 and 16 which is why Wilson won. By 1920 they had their acts together. Also as unpopular as Taft was, he hadn't left the mess Hoover had.

I still think that Jimmy was awesome for bringing back Home brewing to the USA.

It would not have made Billy's beer any better, this i can say with confidence. Imagine if Carter had signed into law: home distilling!

Jeb Bush

Definitely support: 6%
Would consider: 38%
Definitely not support: 48%
No opinion: 8%

Would support/ consider vs. would not support
Democrats 21-72
Republicans 76-18
Independents 44-49

... random national sample of 1,002 adults ... sampling error of 3.5 points ... 30-22-40 percent, Democrats-Republicans-independents ...

If 48% today say they definitely would not support him, he hasn't got a chance
