A "side-effect" of the ACA that the GOP is probably fearing

Fewer desperate young people eagerly signing up for the military..

When we first "un-drafted" the military we still had enough people enlisted for the long term, who could handle things, but....

Our modern military now NEEDS young tech-savvy people who are desperate enough to sign up because of the BENEFITS..

The ones we have in now are pretty much soured after multiple deployments, and if they can leave the military and get affordable health care for their family, many will opt out ASAP..

The new ones required may be less eager to join up if they can now afford benefits without risking life & limb..

but people will eventually NOT be tethered to one job out of fear of having no health care. The less control corporatists have, the better.

There will hopefully NOT be another large ground war any time soon. We'll see what Hillary has in store for us.

And military recruiting activity has gone way down.

Education? Yes. But I never met one person who signed up because of the health care.

Desperate for military health care?

with the military health care system. Even on its best day, it is NOT a reason to dedicate your life to the military.

Not at the OPs suggestion.

In many states (look south), wages are very low and do NOT have benefits, but young people still start families..

If you are single parent with no inclination for college and a $8 hr job at Dairy Queen, the military starts to look pretty appealing..

You must pass a physical in order to join the military. You know, to weed out those with pre-existing problems. That means you have young healthy people being the ones who are signing up. People who really aren't even thinking about health care or insurance.

Yes, I can acknowledge that people do indeed sign up just for health care. But it is few, not many, as you say.

People sign up out of patriotism.
People sign up for education.
People sign up just to travel.
People sign up for a combination of all the benefits, for a better life than the one they had before.

People VERY rarely sign up just for the health care.

I'm sorry, but I don't see it being a positive side-effect of the ACA at all.

Wouldn't young people in need of medical care be rejected by the military anyway?

may be in perfect health, but have children who need care..

The military once took unmarried men who had to get permission to marry while they were in..

Once that "reg" was dropped, the doors were open to young FAMILY-men and then to young single women with kids..

health care is a BIG "carrot"
