Pres Jimmy Carter: Why a generation of white men have solidly embraced the GOP

https://thegrio.com/2014/04/11/jimmy-carter-race-motivates-white-men-to-vote-republican/

And in a no holds barred interview with Salon, the “Man from Plains” spoke plainly about why a generation of white men have solidly embraced the Republican party in multiple elections.

“It’s race. That’s been prevalent in the South…. Ever since Nixon ran — and ever since Johnson didn’t campaign in the deep South, the Republicans have solidified their hold there,” he said.

Carter also said that GOP attacks on programs like food stamps have a coded appeal for the wealthy.

“Those kind of things just exalt the higher class, which is the whites, and they draw a subtle, but very effective racial line throughout the South,” Carter said.

And why did a bunch of southern white men vote for Clinton?

Clinton, after all, won Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri in 1992 and 1996 (except Georgia, but then he won Florida in 1996).

And somehow "not campaigning" is NOT a factor?

religion played a big role. Thus, the religious right was born as part of another southern\midwestern strategy. With Clinton, I'm not sure. But, I think the fact that he is a southerner himself might have gone a long way.

but it was never clear to me which way Perot voters would break. To me, they all sounded kinda conservative, and Perot in some ways also sounded more progressive than Clinton.

Clinton won by a lot of electoral votes in 1992. And he would only need, for example 31% of Perot voters in order to still win in Louisiana. Only 29.5% to still win Tennessee. Only 27.7% to still win Missouri. Only 26% to still win New Mexico. Only 40% to still win Kentucky. Only 27% to still win Pennsylvania only 10% to still win West Virginia.

And he could lose some of those states and still win. Bush would need to get 70% of Perot voters or more, and it is not obvious to me that Perot voters would split for Bush-Clinton by 70% to 30%, much less the 75%-25% he would need to win Missouri and Pennsylvania.

I despised the Republican party even back when I was 18 and I adored Jimmy Carter. I didn't say anything to her, though. She would never have changed her vote, so why get her upset?

Democratic Administration has been removing social benefits. Was any social net program cut during Bush I or Bush II? Democrats recently voting for cuts to SNAP, help seal a continuation of those poor and lower class whites voting for the GOP. Certain GOP lawmakers abstain from voting on theses issues so as to purify themselves when up for re-election. Democratic thirdwayers voting like the GOP, need to be removed in a primary as soon as possible.

Poor, low class, working class whites can delude themselves into thinking they are one of them. The rich see a clear dividing line, but use the republican party to maintain power in our psuedo democracy. The real truth is even darker than old Jimmy sees it.

And of course, those with half, no, a THIRD of a brain know that what Carter is saying is the truth. Which makes all of the "Obama is a moderate Republican crypto fascist who could have been the best liberalest president if he'd used the magical bully pulpit" that much more the rantings of the uninformed and naive.
