When men tell sexist jokes and pass around negative stereotypes about men, it's still wrong.

Can someone explain the difference between:

A guy: "Guys are afraid of strong women and think with their dicks instead of their heads."

An Asian person: "Asian people are poor drivers, I know, I'm Asian."

A Muslim: "Most Muslims are potential terrorists. I know, I'm Muslim!"

What's the difference?

When are we ever going to look at making fun of men under the same harsh light as making jokes about women, no matter who tells the joke?

(Lighten up - I'm being facetious.) I seldom hear male jokes and couldn't tell one if I had a gun to my head because I can't think of any. I have great relationships with the men in my life - I don't do male bashing and they don't do female bashing. Although, the female bashing used to be something my brother and dad did do. To be honest, it's hard to work up any outrage with you or for you when women have been putting up with this forever. I'm afraid I don't have energy left to join in your crusade when a war against women is raging.

If a man considers himself the hapless helpless victim of mistakes that his sex drive forced him to make, it seems very popular to go from there to 'all men are like this'. Kinda like women who say that no woman could ever he happy with a man who didn't dominate and oppress her (i.e. 'act like a man').

not about the character of the man.

in the past, manhood use to be defined in behavior and character. now we have a caricature to represent men.

edit... btw, we have done the same with women. the most shallowest of definition, skipping over the human of who we are

I made my point by saying one can find offense and outrage in anything. Keep looking. You want to equate apples and oranges to appeal to your sense of superiority for some reason, or lack thereof. The logical sense of right and wrong is usually obvious to most. One can dig and find a nugget to drain the swamp with. Anyway, I don't know what happened to bring this on, but I gather perhaps you were insulted and made fun of in a group setting and are lashing out equating minorities and groups of oppression with your own feelings of inadequacies or something. I could be totally off, and if I am right I feel bad and have empathy for your feelings at the moment. you will feel better tomorrow. Seriously though, you are equating wholly different things.

"It's NOT apples and oranges. You are in fact totally off. Sexism is bigotry just like any other..."

I believe that a critical and relevant difference lies in the history of usage and expression; minimizing and trivializing a specific demographic has been used to marginalize sexes, races, and cultures since humanity began recording its own story. Minimizing and trivializing the historical oppressor on the other hand, has not.

Granted, making fun of any one person or group for any reason is vulgar. Yet the degrees of vulgarity are markedly different, one based on coercion, persecution, and dominance; the other based merely on vulgarity for its own sake.

Two like things, despite all their similarities, may indeed contain numerous critical and relevant differences also.

(and if you are indeed tired of sexist jokes, regardless of the target demographic, simply alert on it... )

.... and therefore can't cry "foul" over such things.

I'm not sure who exactly set it up but it ain't workin' so well for "the boys" as a demographic. Stats suggest that the gender divide in industrial societies... while limiting women.... absolutely *murders* men. Three and four times higher rates of suicide, mental illness, stress-related illness for men over women.

Yay. We're in charge.

Me neither. But it would be a good thing if people became more aware of the gender double-standards and multiple double binds that attach to 49% of us.

Then we could at least identify what it is we want to grow out of.

I don't like characterizing giant groups of people (i.e., "men" or "women&quot with broad brush generalizations of any sort. Especially broad brush generalizations with negative implications. And especially broad brush generalizations associated with gender.
