Please Support the Onondaga Nation!

I would like to ask DUers to join in this effort to assist the Onondaga Nation. As many of you know, the Onondaga are the Fire Keepers for the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy). The Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign is closely allied with Onondaga, and I both trust them and endorse their efforts.

(If possible, please give this OP a "k&r," in order for others to see it. Thank you!)

Support Onondaga Nation’s quest for Justice
Posted on April 16, 2014 by Mager
The Onondaga Nation’s quest for Justice took another step forward yesterday!

Two busses carried Onondagas, other Haudenosaunee people and a couple of non-native allies to Washington, DC yesterday. We traveled to show our support for the petition filed by the Onondaga Nation before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (part of the Organization of American States).

A well-attended news conference was held at the Washington Quaker Meeting House and then we went to the White House (though President Obama wasn’t there to welcome us). The Onondaga leaders brought with them the original wampum belt, commissioned by President George Washington, to mark the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua. The Onondaga continue calling on the US government to honor the Covenant Chain of Treaties. President Obama specifically referred to this when speaking to native leaders last fall. Unfortunately, he is taking no action to honor the commitments, at least not yet. .......

Please join Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation in support of the Onondaga Nation as they bring their Land Rights Action to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (part of Organization of American States) as the next step in their quest for justice. They will present their petition in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, April 15.

We will gather at Syracuse’s Inner Harbor, where Onondaga Creek begins its final flow into Onondaga Lake. We will hear about the filing and offer our appreciations. If weather permits, those who wish to will walk to the Lake (about a mile). For more information, contact Carol at carol@peacecouncil.net or 315.472.5478

H2O Man: do you know if they've cleaned up Onondaga Lake? When I was a kid, it was so gross, but I haven't been to the lake itself in years.

I remember my dad muttering about Solvay....

Hope they had a great meeting there, anyway.

granted to a Revolutionary war vet by the Federal government. The Iroquois supported the British during the war, so some of their land was seized then. There are a hell of a lot of people, and millions of dollars worth of development in that territory. As near as I can make out, we're talking about a center slice right through New York State.

http://www.onondaganation.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/landmap2.pdf

While I have no problem with some sort of compensation, I think returning the land at this point would be a major problem.

The Onondaga Nation says it wouldn't make me move:

"Will I be moved from my home?

No.
The Onondaga Nation does not intend a mass exodus of people from their homes. As instructed by our ancestors in the Two Row Wampum, we are to live together in Peace and Friendship Forever. To force families from their homes is not a peaceful way. It happened to our Onondaga villages, we wouldn’t want a similar trauma to happen today. "

http://www.onondaganation.org/land-rights/faq/#homemoved

What isn't clear to me is whether or not the Onondaga Nation claims title to my home and would claim the right to tax me:

http://www.onondaganation.org/land-rights/goals/

Before anyone decides to flame me, consider this: there isn't a square foot of land in the United States that wasn't one time settled by the Native peoples. Would you want to be told that the city where you live is now the territory of an Indian Nation? There needs to be a lot of discussion on how to resolve the injustices of the past.

with two of them right on top of Onondaga Hill. It's so politically correct to agree with the plight of Native Americans due to our history of abusing our nation's tribes.

The Onondaga Nation has never sold or otherwise relinquished its lands or its rights as a sovereign nation. Between 1788 and 1822 the State of New York took approximately 2.5 million acres of Onondaga Nation land, violating federal law, the Constitution and various treaties.

....

Today, the Onondaga Nation consists of a 7,300-acre territory just south of Syracuse, NY.

http://www.onondaganation.org/news/2014/the-onondaga-nation-files-petition-against-united-states-with-inter-american-commission-on-human-rights-41514/

so what does 2.5 million acres look like?

And up in Watertown you have Fort Drum. It include Skaneateles Lake which is the main water supply for Syracuse. All this for an agreement made almost 200 years ago while our country was in its infancy? The Onondaga Nation cast its lot with this lawsuit instead of building a casino like their neighbors did with the Turning Stone. I remember this going on since the 70's.

If they were to prevail they would own that slice of CNY. Why should they prevail? As unfortunate as it was for Native Americans, we came, we saw, and we conquered. They lost and now cry fowl and want it back. I just can't muster up any sympathy for descendants who are really poor stewards of the land they own now. However they'll just rent everybody their land while residents still pay their mortgages. All property owners wouldn't have clear title to their land ... indeed it wouldn't be their land.

Offer reparations maybe? How would one even begin? We'd have to offer reparations to every tribe then and to whoever else was treated unfairly throughout history. They all have descendants too. Without some statute of limitations how far back can we all go? Why not a few centuries? Sure would keep a lot of lawyers very happy lol.

I lived on Onondaga Hill for years in an area adjacent to the Onondaga Indian Reservation. The only thing I can remember is the tribe demanding all the land returned to them. You can understand that our family and people in the area weren't too supportive of our properties being returned to the tribe about something a century ago.

The area is breathtaking in its beauty. I've just never been a proponent of people wanting things that their ancestors fought and lost - either land or agreements made by people on both sides who are now long dead. Like everything else there should be a statute of limitations.

force. That you profited and see that as your legacy doesn't mean that the land wasn't stolen.
That there are people whose land was stolen from them would have a right to fight to have it back to them?

I don't know where on this Earth your ancestors came from...but, if you are like most Americans your family was an immigrant who came here and owned Nothing. And they fled countries where their property rights were taken away. But, America was the NEW COUNTRY...and the Native Americans had the rights to the land they lived on because of their possession of it as "Keepers of the Earth."

Very different from Europe....and the European Model was then imposed on the "Keepers of the Land.'

We are all invaders if we are not the Native Americans.. And we took their land through disgusting terms and they are now involved in taking away Immigrants like you and my rights...to use to Frack and defile for Multi-National Oil Companies.

I understand your view as an Immigrant-- just as I and my Irish/English/French blood mixed Ancestors who took a boat here in the late 1700's from Ireland after fleeing England over religious purge....But we ALL are responsible for taking land away from the native inhabitants of the "NEW COUNTRY". And, respect is owed to those who had this "New Country" to Themselves while all the rest of the world went through their territorial disputes thousands of years before "The New Country" did.

There wereTREATIES SIGNED with the Native Americans whose land we STOLE...and those TREATIES should be Honored. It's our Obligation. We signed it....and Those Treaties should be honored.
