Just waiting for Donald Sterling to say, "I'm not a racist. Why, some of my best friends are not allowed to come to Clippers games!"

Complete transcript of LeBron's response on Donald Sterling. So powerful. So raw. (Read to very last sentence)
What are your thoughts on Donald Sterlings comments?
If the reports are true, its unacceptable.
Its unacceptable in our league. It doesnt matter if youre white, black, Hispanic, whatever, all across the races. Its unacceptable and as a commissioner in our league, they have to make a stand, and they have to be very aggressive with it. I dont know what its going to be, but you just cant have that in our league. Were the model citizens of all sports around the world and because were the most recognizable, I mean, it figures. You see us all the time, you see our logos, you see our players, and for an owner to come out and say the things that he said, its very disrespectful, its very appalling and one of my best friends and dear friends plays on his team in Chris Paul and I havent had an opportunity to talk to him but I can only imagine whats going through his head.

(9,560 posts)like this has even spoken out. On top of being a racist, Sterling is just a wackadoo. Even if you could take the racism out of that man, he still wouldn't be right.

thanks okaawhatever~
Jordan, now the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, released a statement Sunday addressing the matter. He said that as an owner, "I'm completely disgusted that a fellow team owner could hold such sickening and offensive views."
As a former player, Jordan says "I'm completely outraged."
Jordan said he is confident that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will investigate the matter fully and "take appropriate action quickly."
"There is no room in the NBA or anywhere else for the kind of racism and hatred that Mr. Sterling allegedly expressed," Jordan said. "I am appalled that this type of ignorance still exists within our country and at the highest levels of our sport. In a league where the majority of players are African-American, we cannot and must not tolerate discrimination at any level."
I think the team owners might be able to make him sell his team but I'm not sure.
Cha
(308,827 posts)I think I read there was a precident for a team owner having to sell or something.. let me see if I can find that again.

He is old, rich, public and powerful and for some reason, people pay attention to him. Same as the woman who signed pawprints on scorecards. I don't know if Sterling feels his wealth isolates him from civility, or if he just refuses to know any better. Having dealt with Marge Schott for a decade, I'd suggest she embodied the latter.
Marge was recklessly clueless, and didn't give a damn if you knew it. Marge didn't limit her ugliness to blacks. She spread it like buckshot. Schott offended everyone from scouts to Jews, gays to blacks. The litany of her indiscretions was comprehensive and impressive. No need to amplify here. You remember what she said."

(2,117 posts)People aren't going to the Staples Center or the American Airlines Arena because Donald Sterling owns the team. But if they trade away Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, they'll definitely suffer from poor attendance just like they did before those two were on the team. If the owners really made the game, like Sterling seems to think, they'd never negotiate with the players' union at all, because they could just pick random guys up off the street and the game wouldn't suffer. Likewise, the players' union could leave the NBA and create their own league, and the NBA would cease to exist.

The Republican urge to spin Sterling's 3 donations in the 80s into him being a Democrat suggests they assumed he was a Republican.

(308,827 posts)Despite a June 26, 2006 Los Angeles Times article, detailing the Donald T. Sterling Charitable Foundation's pledge to spend $50 million on a site on the eastern end of Downtown Los Angeles to provide services for Los Angeles' homeless population, nothing has been built. According to an LA Weekly article from February 19, 2008, critics were skeptical that the homeless center would ever be built, and surmised that Sterling bought the property purely for its real-estate value. A follow up article from the LA Weekly states that the foundation has yet to even start attempting to deliver on its promises but continues to run full-page ads trumpeting its pledge in the LA Times.

(9,560 posts)Clearly he's learned first hand how sometimes life can just kick your ass.
I don't think the guy is really a Dem. One of the two candidates he supported was a former basketball player and the other was someone I think he knew, also. It's probably a good thing this guy hasn't been doling out money to politicians. I shudder to think who he'd be aligned with.

(9,560 posts)swore she'd get even (the getting even part is rumor. The lawsuit is public info.) From NY Daily News:
Sterlings wife is embroiled in a bitter lawsuit against V. Stiviano, who she alleges in the suit, engages in conduct designed to target, befriend, seduce, and then entice, cajole, borrow from, cheat, and/or receive as gifts transfers of wealth from wealthy older men whom she targets for such purpose. Plaintiff is informed and believes and theron alleges that One such target was D. Sterling.
The lawsuit, filed on by Rochelle H. Sterling on March 7 of this year, lists the defendant as V. Stiviano, aka Vanessa Maria Perez, aka Monica Gallegos, aka Maria Monica Perez Gallegos, aka Maria Valdez.
The suit claims Sterling bought Stiviano a 2012 Ferrari, two Bentleys and a 2013 Range Rover, with a total exceeding $500,000.
