This is a world wide event May 24,2014. Here is a link letting you know a location near you.

Last year it was covered by Al Jazeera America but not the major U.S. media. Millions & millions attended these marches world wide. I was told a local station did a 2 minute segment. Once.
I am letting people know that this is Something you can Do, participate in. Make a sign, take a friend. I'm doing a picnic lunch with daughter & am trying to get her friends involved. Make a party.
I am also putting up flyers; Monsanto wants to keep the public in dark regarding the health hazards. I say no.
In K.C.MO Jill Valentine is the organizer & she has a facebook page. Just type in March Against Monsanto K.C. & it should display.
It would be cool to meet some DUer's in the area. I'm traveling from Excelsior Springs MO- about a 35 minute drive. It was fun last year.

(36,416 posts)Every year, Monsanto closes it down for the duration, like clockwork. Always a local news story of the non-event.

(9,126 posts)They'll be here calling you a science denier fairly soon. Because you're supposed to trust all big corps-funded short-term studies and just eat it on faith...because Science! Yes, this is sarcasm, but it does get me a bit bothered. If it's so great, label it!
Thanks for the info. I donate to labeling initiatives as much as possible. Sadly, big money won out here in California. But it looks like the North East might be the leaders on this one.

(84 posts)anything they want. Yeah, that was a bummer about California - it was big money all the way. My understanding is that the initiative to label was majority approved until money (not truth) in advertising swayed people. I wonder why we don't have enforceable laws about truth/facts in advertising!
P.S. Thank you for advising me to post the bundy caper/Koch as an OP. You were right. People did want to know.
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)That was an excellent graphic and needed to be seen. You've made two great OPs in as many days! Good on you.
And as for the pro-GMO people, I lovingly remind them that since I refuse to eat the poison, it means more for them!

(9,126 posts)They had to fight as if it was a life or death struggle because we are so large, it would have meant basically labeling for the whole country. I'm glad to see people fighting back. Yes, surprisingly blue California falls for scams and there are a few pockets of fundie nuttery. Maybe it will pass next time.

(8,911 posts)Why I don't I like GMO foods?
My response was that: It's not that I don't like GMO foods, it's that I want it labeled so it's my decision to buy it or not buy it.
But if we label GMO's corporations like Monsanto would have to disclose that info and presumably consumers like me would avoid them likebthe plague. Also, we consumers would actually see all the products that are GMO.
We have no idea how many foods are GMO'd.

(84 posts)and inform as many people as possible. I've written roy blunt the senator who snuck this through on a farm bill. His response was -it's perfectly safe - there, there little consumer. (I've got the letter somewhere). I've done research & 800 scientists agree that Monsanto is committing bio-warfare on our food & soil & environment. Here's a link for the 800 - http://www.naturalnews.com/040447_gmo_biowar_food.htmlr
There is a lot of info out there just not much consumer awareness. That's why I am marching & putting up flyers. The bigger the marches, the more attention, like a ripple in a pond. People become aware & share.
Monsanto is a huge 'contributor' to blunt's campaigns. I think that is the long and short of it all.

(8,911 posts)Mr. Blunt, you say you're for a free market, and the consumer will decide which business succeeds and which ones fail.
If we the consumer are allowed the information needed to make an educated decision, and let us determine if "it's perfectly safe", you know very well that Monsanto would be in the failed column.
Ae you for a free market or not?

(84 posts)the same old form letter. Out of the 3 republican representatives I have, only one has responded with a thought out reply. I keep trying though!
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)Consumers rejected GMO foods. That's why they fight so hard against labeling here. So faith in "the market" is all a scam.
Japan has refused more than one shipment of U.S. corn (don't have the link close) and that's Millions of lost revenue to the U.S. But Monsanto still makes profit. So screwed up.
As far as I know 26 countries have banned gmo's in one form or another. Here's a link where Monsanto LOST to an indigenous culture.

I like to remind myself that battles can be won against behemoths.

(9,126 posts)Because of the boom in how unhealthy we are and the fact that by 2050, they are predicting 50% of the population will die of cancer. This is nothing to mess around with.

(84 posts)with this. I think it's important that if you Can do something to make a difference it is a responsibility.
Worse, pesticide is being injected into the seed. You can't wash that cr@p off.

(84 posts)here is a link to organic seeds in various states.

We may not have representation in the congress. Not against the likes of the lobby machine, but we can refuse to buy their cr@p. We all know money is the bottom line.
