Dean Angstadt fells trees for a living.
He's a self-employed, self-sufficient logger who has cleared his own path for most of his 57 years, never expecting help from anyone. And even though he'd been uninsured since 2009, he especially wanted nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act.
"I don't read what the Democrats have to say about it because I think they're full of it," he told his friend Bob Leinhauser, who suggested he sign up.
That refrain changed this year when a faulty aortic valve almost felled Angstadt. Suddenly, he was facing a choice: Buy a health plan, through a law he despised, that would pay the lion's share of the cost of the life-saving surgery - or die. He chose the former.
snip//
"I probably would have ended up falling over dead" without the surgery, Angstadt said. "Not only did it save my life, it's going to give me a better quality of life."
snip//
For me, this isn't about politics," he added. "I'm trying to help other people who are like me, stubborn and bullheaded, who refused to even look. From my own experience, the ACA is everything it's supposed to be and, in fact, better than it's made out to be."

Wonder how he'll vote in the next election? For Allyson Schwartz who is running on Obamacare against Tom Corbett?
"Democratic candidate for governor proudly touts Obamacare"
"Some Democrats may be reluctant to brag about their support for President Obama and his health care law in the 2014 midterm elections, but not Allyson Schwartz.
The congresswoman who is running for Pennsylvania governor revealed a new campaign ad Tuesday that highlights both her support of Obama and the national health care law, as well as the role she played in getting the law passed.
I am proud to have worked with President Obama to write and pass the Affordable Care Act, landmark legislation that is helping 8 million Americans get affordable, quality health coverage, she said in a statement touting the ad."

(1,250 posts)He just had a Sh*t Got Real moment.
Those things can be life-changing.
You may not see it overnight but Obamacare will make him begin to question his political views.
Obamacare, the Affordable Care Act, wasn't this big boogeyman he was told it was.
It was either sign up or die & he valued his life.
Now he will spread the word.
Lots of people on here said it & it's true.
Republicans tried to shut this down because they KNEW it would create people who loyal to the Democratic Party.
They KNEW that it would even create this loyalty from defectors of the Republican Party.
The Republican Party & the "Conservative" Movement it houses is dying.
Things like Obamacare speeds up the flatline.

(306,945 posts)might tend to make us take the blinders off!
I think we'll see more and more Democrats running on their support for Obamacare in 2014 as the truth comes out and the Republican distortions and lies are exposed. This is VERY good news for the country.
Allyson Schwartz rocks!
Cha
(306,945 posts)she might want to get in touch with Dean Angstadt and see if he wants to do a campaign ad for ACA?

(5,398 posts)...don't get me wrong, I'm a "Medicare for All" single payer type-o-guy...cuz I think we could save another 15% on the overhead, compared to the for-profit model of the ACA.
But, thanks to Obamacare, at the age of 59, as a self-employed visual artist/musician, I have a health insurance policy for the first time ever, in my life.
I'm paying a way-affordable rate on premiums, thanks to the Fed Subsidies.
Cha
(306,945 posts)for it so very hard!
Speaking of awesome.. so glad you got your Affordable Health Care! Good ol Feds.

(23,156 posts)would vote Democratic this fall, we'd own the House and Senate.
I'm not terribly convinced that very many of them will do so. If Dems run ads saying: The Republican wants to take away your health care, and Do you really want to go back to what it was before? And highlighting stories like Dean Angstadt, we have a chance.
Cha
(306,945 posts)know the m$m won't be doing any positive stories. But, plenty of horror ones.
GOTV Rep Allyson Schwartz 2014!

(118,655 posts)I'm so pissed off that I live in a red state that made it impossible for me to benefit from the Medicaid expansion. The cheapest healthcare plan without the government subsidy was $238/month which was outside my means to pay the premium.
I'm beginning to think that I might need a colonoscopy due to some of my medical symptoms (no bleeding, thank goodness). From my brother's descriptions of his BMs it is even more likely that he does (although I wish he wouldn't make the public announcement that he needs to make one or the results afterwards--he could definitely use some lessons in tact and diplomacy).

(102 posts)Looks like some people are finally seeing through one of the big CONs perpetrated on the American people by CONservatives, libercarelessians, rethugliCONs, cwhorepoRATes, and teabaggers. The really good part is that when they do see the light, they become the absolute best sales people for the
ACA.
