Costs of Pentagon’s major weapons systems ballooned half a trillion dollars over initial pricetags

from the WaPo: http://wapo.st/1kuYT5h

Cost of Pentagon weapons systems up a half trillion dollars; delays (on almost every order) of more than two years

The costs of the Pentagon’s major weapons systems have ballooned nearly half a trillion dollars over their initial price tags, and the 80 programs have average schedule delays of more than two years, according to a report released Wednesday.

The report by the Government Accountability Office came during a congressional hearing in which Senators from both parties vented about continued cost overruns, billions of dollars wasted when contracts are cancelled and a system that is plagued by a high level of turnover that prevents anyone from being held accountable . . .

. . . gotta love how legislators are blaming the process instead of taking responsibility for voting for the weapons. THIS is where the money goes that most Americans expect would be spent on needs like extending unemployment insurance. There's seemingly no limit to what they're willing to give to the defense industry; our domestic budget kept in the red. All of that 'venting' . . . they know damn well that they won't cut off the industry spigot.

No problem, we can just further slash aid to the poor and default on the $2.6T in Social Security bonds and we'll be ahead of the game.

Those poor and elderly need to stop being moochers anyway.

The "missile defense" program.

Every time it's tested without cheating, (like putting a homing device on the target,) it fails.

And billions have gone down that rat hole.

. . . most of the money spent is unaccountable to the public, outside of whatever some compromised senator sitting on some defense appropriations committee knows.

I wrote about this during the Bush administration: Selling Son of Star Wars Missile Defense To Europe Threatens New Cold War

. . . and, during this one:

Biden pledges to continue work on 'missile defense' to counter unspecific threat from Iran: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5003219

here's something neat: New 'missile defense' test: "We're not going to try to hit the target"
