Barton: Not Allowing Women To Vote Was Designed 'To Keep The Family Together'
Submitted by Kyle Mantyla on Thursday, 5/1/2014 1:57 pm
On today's episode of "WallBuilders Live," David Barton explained that women were not given the right to vote when the Constitution was written because the Founding Fathers were trying to protect the institution of the family by giving every "family" a right to vote through the male head of the household.

(14,337 posts)and my husband voting Republican?
Or voting straight Democratic and lying to him about it later. Since it's none of his business, it's one of those things that deserves a lie.
It all works.

(3,596 posts)The reason women weren't given the right to vote was because at the time women were viewed as little more than property. Throughout the Declaration of Independence and other documents from that period there is reference to all "men" are created equal. They don't use the term "people", "citizens", etc. They specifically use the term "men".
That was the cultural standard at the time. By the same token they considered that slaves were to be counted as 3/5 of a person for purposes of the census and Congressional apportionment.
There was no "family" concept as David Barton suggests.
