An unidentified police officer in Hammond, Indiana was suspended a day after getting caught on video apparently abusing his K-9 partner, WMAQ-TV reported on Thursday.
The officer can be seen using the dogs leash to pull it onto his hind legs, then striking it in the midsection with part of the leash before briefly pulling the dog off the ground entirely by the leash. The officer then both hit the dog and pulled it off the ground again before being allowed to walk normally.
The Times of Northwest Indiana reported that Hammond police confirmed that the video was shot during a traffic stop Wednesday evening. No arrests were made, though the vehicle involved was towed from the scene. Authorities noted that the clip showed just over a minute of footage from a stop that lasted more than 10 minutes.

The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave pending a full investigation of the incident, Lt. Richard Hoyda was quoted as saying. At this time, the department has observed behavior by the K-9 handler that appears to be inconsistent with acceptable training guidelines.

(11,911 posts)assaulting an officer. Maybe some departments make exceptions for police assaulting police dogs just as they do with police assaulting humans.
