3. Why There Is No Cure for the GOP's Benghazi Fever

The current outbreak of Benghazi Fever shows how strong the virus is—and that it is apparently immune to basic remedy.

On Friday, the Republicans went full Benghazi. House Speaker John Boehner announced he was setting up a special House committee to investigate the attack—that is, the Obama White House's response to it. Meanwhile, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the chair of the House government oversight committee, subpoenaed Secretary of State John Kerry to testify before his committee on May 21 about the State Department's handling of GOP congressional inquiries about Benghazi. (Apparently, Issa is now probing a supposed cover-up of the original supposed cover-up.)

This week, Issa, Fox News, and other Benghazi-ists rushed to the ramparts once again, when a White House email was released showing that a top Obama aide had suggested that an administration spokeswoman defend the president's policy regarding the Arab Spring and the Muslim world following a series of anti-American attacks that included the September 11, 2012, assault on the US diplomatic facility in Benghazi. As part of the interagency effort then underway to prep then-UN Ambassador Susan Rice for appearances on several Sunday morning talk shows—the exercise that produced the Benghazi talking points Republicans have been howling about ever since—Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser, wrote that one goal for Rice was to "underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy."

A-ha! cried the Benghazi truthers. Here's proof that the White House schemed to convince the public that the tragic attack—which claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans—was merely the result of protests spurred by an anti-Islam video made by some American wacko, not the doing of Al Qaeda or its allies. President Obama and his comrades, the Benghazi truthers insist, wanted to cover up the politically inconvenient fact that Al Qaeda-ish terrorism was responsible for the killing of four Americans, since acknowledgment of this would have tainted the counter-terrorism credentials of Obama, the Bin Laden slayer, and decreased his chances of reelection.

But as we know now, the CIA and the State Department took the lead in fashioning the talking points. ...

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called White House officials "scumbags," saying they "lied about" the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

“Some guy said this about me yesterday on the left: The only reason I cared about (Benghazi) was because I have six tea party opponents. Well, if that’s true, I’m the biggest scumbag in America," Graham said in a Thursday interview on The Mike Gallagher Show. "I don’t think that’s true. I know it’s not true. It would be almost impossible for Lindsey Graham -- given who I am and what I’ve been doing for the last 20 years -- not to care about those in harm’s way, who get killed, and not go on to hold the administration accountable that lied about it.”

“The scumbags are the people in the White House who lied about this,” Graham added later.

Graham hasn't been shy about criticizing President Barack Obama's administration over the Benghazi attack. In March he even said the Russian invasion into Ukraine has its roots in Benghazi.

On Thursday, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing on the military’s response to the Benghazi attack. Senate Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) criticized Republicans for the hearing, saying that it all amounted to a "subterfuge" called "Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi."

Maybe the Democratic Party should hire John Fugelsang to write their narratives. He has been on point for the last several weeks on MSNBC with fact based points to counter the GOP. John Fugelsang identifies the Benghazi fever occurring on the Right appropriately as the exploitation of four dead Americans.

”They don’t care about these four innocent dead people,” John Fugelsang said. “We went from using a terror attack in 2001 to cheer on a president to using a terror attack in 2012 to smear on a president. They exploited three thousand terror dead to attack Iraq. Now they exploit four terror dead to attack Barack.”

John Fugelsang went on to make the most salient point. “This is all about one thing. And it’s not about a cover up,” John Fugelsang said. “If they cared about a cover up, Oliver North would be breaking rocks in a Federal Pen right now. This is about 2014. The GOP has no ideas and they’ve got to get the base out. This gets them angry. And I am sorry but the Democrats are taking this like a real piñata … and they keep getting pummel on this. The Democrats need to turn this around and call these guys out for what they are really doing, a crass exploitation of four tragic deaths for a really disgusting political gain.”

Later on John Fugelsang went on to describe the hypocrisy of GOP concern. Under Bush, several US installations were hit throughout the world. Reagan sold weapons to Iraq. Where was the real merited outrage?

I wish I didn't have to do these compilations. What the Republicans are doing with this tragedy -- basically exploiting it for political and financial gain -- is simply disgusting and shameful. They have to be exposed.

Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi – that’s pretty much all Republicans want to talk about. But why wouldn’t they? With the most recent jobs report being strong, unemployment falling to 6.3% and “Obamacare” enrollment surpassing 8 million sign ups, they need something to distract from all the positive news. Well that, and they have a desperate need to continue to keep Benghazi in the headlines because they’re terrified of Hillary Clinton in 2016.

So yes, get ready to hear about Benghazi for the next 2+ years. That much I can promise you. And these current hearings will be nothing more than a right-wing circus. Sure, they’re allowing 5 democrats to be on the committee, but that’s just so that they can say the hearing was bi-partisan and impartial. After all, how would the hearing look if Republicans excluded Democrats altogether? Let’s be honest, that’s what they would really like to do.

But as tempting as it is for Democrats to be a part of this committee, they shouldn’t have to do it. By participating, all they’re doing is adding legitimacy to this Republican sideshow.

Who cares what Republicans say? We’ve had thousands of pages of reports from actual intelligence committees that have told us what happened that night. There’s no “mystery.” And this new committee isn’t about finding out what happened, because we already know!
