Even GOP is getting sick of Benghazi deceit

By Jay Bookman
The lying and deception being used to fuel the Benghazi "controversy" has begun to embarrass even some prominent Republicans, and they're starting to speak out against the tactics employed by House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa.

The latest is U.S. Rep. Buck McKeon, the Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. His committee has held extensive hearings into the question of whether U.S. military assets could have responded in time to assist our people in Benghazi, and it has concluded emphatically that the answer is no.

This week, however, Issa tried to resurrect the issue by caling a retired Air Force brigadier general to testify that "the military could have made a response of some kind" but did not, suggesting a response had been held back by the State Department. That claim quickly became headlines at Fox News, and was seized upon by U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, who has been egregiously irresponsible and loose with the facts on this issue.

"We didn’t run to the sound of the guns,” Chaffetz said. “We had Americans dying. We had dead people. We had wounded people and our military didn’t try to engage in that fight."

That brought an unusually harsh response from McKeon, who noted that the retired general, Robert Lovell, did not serve in the chain of command in charge of events that night and had no firsthand knowledge of what capabilities were available.

If you are on the Benghazi train you are committing a form of treason...

I am sick and tired of not knowing if I have the exactly correct legal term for something, what I know is the right have become domestic terrorists...

We can accept that now as a country or in 5 more years when it will be too late.

Their delusion, bordering on mental illness, is the exact same as the captain portrayed in that film. Exactly.

The GOP is embarrassing themselves with contrived controversies, half truths and lies that they are using to embarrass the President and the Dems. However, it is backfiring on them.

Like the OP says - .... has begun to 'embarrass' even some prominent Republicans...

But even more critical than 'embarrassing' some prominent Republicans - it is embarrassing their constituents. More and more people that call themselves Repubs are too embarrassed to admit it now that they are Repubs. They are not so stupid to be fooled by these contrived controversies, half truths and lies; by the 50+ attempts to repeal ACA; by the fact that their Party is on the wrong side of all the issues.

Go down the list: women's rights; voting suppression; immigration; LBGT; minimum wage; unemployment; Medicare; Social Security and on, and on and on.

I know that the MSM is saying that the Repubs will retain the House and have a shot at the Senate in 2014 - but more and more I'm running into people that once called themselves Repubs - that are too embarrassed to admit it now and are either going to sit out 2014 and not vote or vote for the Dems.

I'll keep on saying this 'embarrass' is the key word. Use it on your Repug friends and associates. Say to them - "You must be embarrassed to call yourself a Repub now" or "You must be embarrassed for the crazy things your Party is saying or doing".

Plant that seed in their brain. Believe me - it works. This is the way to win back the House in 2014 and maintain the Senate.

This should be part of our GOTV strategy.

Charles Krauthammer and a few others have said it's time to close the chapter on Benghazi.

Instead of no high card points (a Yarborough) if you have ALL the high points then call "Benghazi!"

(For bridge players: get it?)
