The recent decision on prayer is just the beginning of series of incremental moves to Christianize our government. There are elements in the US who will never give up their goal of making our nation a nation ruled by Biblical principles and laws. And theocratization is being established more and more at the local level as well. The legal battles of the reproductive coverage under ACA are just another skirmish in the long term goal of changing the focus of our government. Prayer in schools and biblical courses will most likely be the next assault in the public domain.
Low vote turnouts continue to empower these elements because they tend to vote in blocs. And many churches continue to politic from the pulpit with impunity. If voters were to turn out in larger numbers these smaller radical elements would not get their candidates and policies in place.
These radical religious elements are supported by powerful monied interests and billionaires who care less about cultural issues but need these votes to advance their own economic agenda. Large amounts of money supporting these groups have already had a big impact.
One day we could wake up and find this nation has changed in some very bad ways. We need to wake up.

(11,804 posts)And the contours of this decision are pretty scary - in that it appears to open the door to allowing Christian prayers to be the only prayers rather than representing the community.
It's still a fairly minor achievement though, compared to say their work on restricting access to abortion where they've made much greater strides.

(16,046 posts)You build a house, one brick at a time...and that's exactly what the Dominionists are doing!
If something they take up to the court doesn't fly, they'll reword it and try again...until the house they want has been built.
And then, it will be too late for the rest of us...

(10,602 posts)I have been following this movement for a long time. Moyers interviewed a preacher from Texas many years ago on one of his programs. This preacher told him that this would become a Christian nation and that their revolution had already begun. Moyers was visibly incensed because the preacher made it clear that the populace would have NO choice the matter. It was like they had begun an insurgency against our government that might take decades.
When I was in Kentucky when we buried my mother in law in 2008 we went to their Sunday service so we could meet the preacher before the funeral. This preacher spent his whole sermon about how this was a Christian nation and how they WOULD NOT BE DENIED.
I believe their insurgency is much more dangerous than anyone realizes. If you really pay close attention to events we already have so many places in the US that accept this idea. What makes it much more problematic is that our oligarchs are more than willing to supply as much money to support these kooks because they need their votes.
Most of the public is pretty much clueless about how many inroads have already been made. We can almost make no progress in the South and in some sections of the north because of the influence of the churches. Lest we forget most of SCOTUS is Catholic and some are Opus Dei radicals.
The fact that some of these Christian? politicians can openly attack reproductive rights and get elected is notable.
