Clear Channel owned by Bain And Romney will reportedly be converted to a Business & Finance formant. All present progressive voices in Denver will eventually go silent. The only thing left will be 2 or 3 RW stations where only conservatives have a voice.
Ever since the last presidential election the RW and its allies are determined to purge all progressive voices from the country. Rhodes will be gone. Our local voice Gloria was silenced yesterday.
We have been losing progressive stations consistently over the last four years and the trend is accelerating. And it does not matter that these new formats make NO money because the powers that be have enough money to sustain these shows indefinitely even if they have few listeners. Almost no where in the media is the public interest served.
The GOP, business, and its RW allies see a day when they are the only voice that will be heard. The purge is just in time for the upcoming elections. These groups continually say they will tolerate no other voices but theirs. We look more like Nazi Germany or some other dictatorship every day. There may be a day when you are arrested for what you think. When you see how ruthlessly the Occupy movement was handled and watch the suppressive machinery continue to go after what is left it is obvious we no longer have any semblance of democracy. Even some GOP reps and wannabes say that they are the only ones who have a right to free speech.
Certainly Democrats have a supposed problem with messaging but their problem goes far beyond that. The Dems have no outlets for their message save paid for commercials.

(65 posts)Most recent Neilsen ratings I could find (Feb 2014):
http://www.coloradomedia.net/forums/showthread.php?34047-February-2014-Denver-Boulder-Radio-Ratings
850 KOA (conservative talk): 3.8
630 KHOW (conservative talk): 1.8
760 KKZN (progressive talk): 0.4
760 was the lowest-rated station on the entire AM dial in Denver.

(10,602 posts)The fact that so many people are unable to address the positives of being progressive, pro worker, and pro policies that advances us all. We are our own worst enemy. We will continue to move backward to 3rd world status under trickle down and no labor rights policy.
The present direction of this nation will continue go down for working people until they wake up. Decent jobs with long term possibilities and opportunities are the only way you make it over a long career. The present formula offers nothing.
If the ratings are that low shame on us. KOA and KHOW show that too many people have their heads up their asses and deserve their miserable economic fate.

(32,016 posts)Clear Channel can suck it. Guess what, capitalism has screwn over our media...even Louie Gohmert and Sean Hannity will acknowledge that. The airwaves serve the public, whether you can profit off that or not.
It's sad a whole generation of people have grown up (if they listened to radio post-1987) with a hyper-commercialized profit-no-matter-what media instead of a media that truly serves the public.
Clear Channel's final progressive talk stations:
- KABQ 1350 Albuquerque, NM: http://abqtalk.com/
- WPEK 880 Asheville, NC: http://880therevolution.com/
- WXXM 92.1 Madison/WKKV 100.7 HD3 Milwaukee: http://themic921.com/
Ironically, Clear Channel not only KEPT 92.1 Madison a progressive station (instead of sports) after listeners protested back in 2006, Clear Channel actually expanded coverage of that station to Milwaukee (albeit on an HD subchannel but that's a start) IN 2011 - the same year Clear Channel toned down the progressive shows on AM 960 San Francisco. And 92.1 has consistently had local drive time shows throughout its time as a progressive talker.
The WXXM case shows that a progressive talk station can work if properly marketed and programmed. WXXM has better ratings than Clear Channel's WTSO "Big 1070" sports station (and a higher share than the AM progressive stations).
Interesting side note, 760 Denver's ratings went slightly HIGHER in March 2014 vs the past few months.
1350 Albuqerque has bounced all over the place, from spring to winter 2013-14: 1.5, 0.8, 2.2, 0.9.
I think the problem is that commercial talk radio just isn't the type of media that appeals to more progressive thinking people. Why progressive talk struggles in today's media landscape has the same reason why bubblegum pop music dominates the FM. Heck, NPR usually trumps right wing talk in ratings in a lot of places in America, as NPR has a less sensationalist, more serious format that appeals to a more sophisticated audience. My favorite progressive talkers are Thom Hartmann, Norman Goldman, and (reluctantly) Mike Malloy, but I admit listening to NPR more often.

(47,803 posts)Although I totally agree with the leftie talkers, and I like the idea of listening to kindred spirits, I don't listen much.
I tend towards NPR (or music).
Part of it is, frankly, that I get bored and/or tired of being made angry by listening to the "us vs them" Talk Radio format whether Liberal or ConnedServative.
I guess I'd rather learn things and/or catch up on the news, or forget the whole fucking mess and listen to music.

(32,016 posts)Albeit with Randi Rhodes reruns replacing the Gloria Neal morning show. Still time to organize a protest like successfully done in Madison over 92.1. 760 should at least get Stephanie Miller in the morning if it reneges on its format change. According to Norman Goldman the flip will happen by Memorial Day.

(32,016 posts)a generic "KKZN Thornton, Denver, Boulder" without the "AM 760" or "Progressive" brands.
