Why Rand Paul Can't Stop, Won't Stop Talking About Hillary Clinton

DYLAN SCOTT – MAY 12, 2014, 6:00 AM EDT

Needling Hillary Clinton is something of a favorite pastime for Republicans -- while also part of a very conscious effort to undercut her presidential candidacy before it officially gets started.

But while much of the stone-throwing has been left to the paid operatives at America Rising PAC and elsewhere, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has lately seemed to relish in getting in on the action. From Monica Lewinsky to National Security Agency wiretapping to Benghazi, he has been attacking the Clintons frequently and from all angles in recent months.

What is impossible to ignore, of course, is that Paul is a presumed 2016 contender himself. There is some disagreement on the right on what exactly his angle is. Is this simply red meat for the base? Or is he shoring up his general election bonafides? His camp, meanwhile, insists that he's just talking about the issues he cares about.

But when Paul makes comments like he did Friday at the Republican National Committee's spring meeting, arguing that Hillary's handling of Benghazi during her time at the State Department had "precluded" her from being president, it becomes impossible not to see it as 2016 maneuvering.

Besides, how many times does Liz Warren have to deny her interest in running for president before it sinks in with some people? She just repeated it on Sunday when she was asked if Hillary chose not to run, would she consider running and she again said NO.

Why didn't she wear make-up, why didn't she get contact lenses, and more importantly to them, why didn't she take her husband's name? Bill lost his reelection to governor in 1980, he ran again and won. It's a sad state of events that by then Hillary had to change her outer appearance and adopt her husband's last name.

When Bill ran for president in 1992, many couldn't understand what her role would be. This was a different kind of future first lady, the first one to have a graduate degree. She was a working attorney who was articulate and as smart and capable as her husband. Her quote about staying home and baking cookies is still mentioned in RW circles.

We all already know that they have hounded her ever since. Mentioning either Clinton is catnip for the RW and any Republican candidate knows as much. Marco Rubio also mentioned Hillary this past few days. They are playing to the base.

Unfortunately for them, it's not going to make a dent in her polling or in her decision whether to run or not.
