Should Columbus, Ohio be renamed, now that Columbus is considered to be a genocidal maniac?

Many streets and squares in Germany were named after Hitler, but needless to say, all have subsequently been renamed. Now that many consider Christopher Columbus to be little better than Hitler, one may question whether it is inappropriate to have a major city named after him.

But of course, if it ever comes down to a vote.....let the people decide. TBH, I think "Scioto" would be a particularly good alternative name for the city, including for the fact that it's a Native American placename and that it sits on a river of that same name.

Not as bad as Hitler is a pretty low bar.

Dead Scalped Wannabe Indian Killer, South Dakota, kind rolls off the tongue, though.

There's also a Custer County in Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma and South Dakota, and towns called "Custer" in Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington state.

The only reason she was there is because her great grand father had been a member of Custer's expedition, but got drunk and missed the boat when the rest of the Seventh Calvary went off to meet its demise.

In Miss., we have a Columbus and a Columbia. There would be cities, counties, streets, squares, schools, and other places that would have to be renamed. In retrospect, it's unfortunate that all these places have been named for such a man as he was, and I don't care if people do change the names of some of those places, but I don't fault people for not changing them, either. Sooner or later, we have to face the fact that all past wrongs from history cannot be righted, and there are places named for bad people just about everywhere you go.

If we had to rename it we would go with the original name: Franklinton.

Not going to happen though.

One good thing is we'd have to get rid of the model of the Santa Maria floating in the Scioto. I mean come on, Columbus didn't actually float here.

I went to grade school in Portsmouth, where the Scioto and the Ohio come together -- a 77 foot flood wall back in those days. '45 to early 50's. Grew up on Wood Hayes football, smile.

Enjoy your time in Columbus.

you lose. Last time I checked, Columbus was not the leader of his country.

Why don't you look at the leader of the country that bankrolled Columbus and then continued sending "missions" to the "New World".

King County, Washington(where Seattle is located) was originally named after former Vice-President(and slave owner) William Rufus King, but a few years back county leaders decided it would be "renamed" after Martin Luther King, Jr. instead. Maybe Columbus, Ohio, could do something similar? Though admittedly I don't know any other famous people named Columbus.
