Fox News host Tucker Carlson suggested on Wednesday that obesity was only a problem for poor people because theres not a single fat person in rich neighborhoods.
On the Fox News show Out Numbered, host Harris Faulkner noted that recent studies had shown that unemployed people were at risk for gaining weight.
Id have to think that this is embarrassing for this White House, Faulkner argued. Youve got on the one hand, the first lady doing the Lets Move campaign, and youve got on the other hand, Well, where is the president on the Lets Move with Jobs campaign?
Youre right, their agendas are at loggerheads with one another, Carlson agreed. His economic policy meets her fitness policy, and collision.
But Carlson also saw a silver lining in the news that unemployment leads to weight gain.
All of us should be happy about one thing, and its that for the first time in human history you have a country whose poor people are fat. So this does show this sort of amazing abundance, he opined.
What? Faulkner gasped.
For the last however many millennia, poor people starved to death, Carlson explained. And this is a country thats so rich, whose agriculture sector is so vibrant and at the cutting edge technologically, that our food is so cheap, poor people are fat! I mean, I dont know. We shouldnt take that for granted.
The cheaper foods tend to have the more fattening and artificial ingredients, Faulkner pointed out.
I just saying, up until about 20 minutes ago historically speaking people just wanted enough calories, Carlson replied. And weve certainly achieved that.
Carlson admitted that people eat their feelings when they were depressed about finding work, but he said that obesity was also a cultural divide.
Go to a rich neighborhood, theres not a single fat person on the street, he opined. No one smokes cigarettes, no ones overweight. The middle of the country looks nothing like the edges. And that is a problem, I think.

The dude that oversees FOX News (Roger Ailes) isn't exactly svelte either.

(904 posts)Unfortunately eating healthy is very expensive. Buying fresh fruits, veggies and wholesome, organic foods can be way out of reach for the poor. They are forced to buy cheaper products that tend to be very high in sodium and fats such as macaroni products, cheeses, hot dogs, breads, sugary drinks, packaged foods and store brand products.
My husband and I are both trying to lose weight and our grocery bill is much higher than it used to be because we are buying fresh and organic.
If someone is overweight it may not be because they are indulging in too much food, just all the wrong food.

(595 posts)just less of it... used myfitnesspal to track my calories... lost 100 pounds in 9 months and kept it off over a year... then I started adding some of the muscle I lost back... I'm up about 10 pounds from my lowest...
you don't have to eat fresh and organic to lose weight...
and health wise I am fine... all my numbers are good... doc says I'm in great shape... I can run half a marathon distances in under two hours and a 5k in 24 minutes... and now that I am putting muscle back on I can bench over my weight which is 190 right now... two years ago I could not run 100 yards...
and do I love wings and pizza... yes I do... I do eat a cup of plain oatmeal ever morning and that is cheap... doubt its organic... but 10 pounds for $10 can't be beat...

(904 posts)Unfortunately many folks who live in poverty do not own cars and have to walk to whatever food stores are available. In my hometown a grocery store closed right in the middle of a very poor area of the city, where folks walked to get groceries. That meant people had to use convenience stores to get food. It became a critical situation and the mayor was able to negotiate a deal for someone else to move into the grocery store that closed. The pricing is still not as good as the original grocery store, but at least folks have a neighborhood grocery store to shop at.

(1,092 posts)if there is no place nearby to buy food, a full grocery store... one has to have transportation... and shop quite differently.

(9,796 posts)The reason obesity is a problem among poor people is that it's simply more expensive to eat well. According to on study I read, it's a difference of $1.50 a day to eat healthily. That's $135 a month for a single mother and her kid.
