Trayvon Martin shooting time line -- help me flesh this out ...

I am working to create a solid time line of that evening's events. I am trying to incorporate as much witness/evidence detail as possible, including all discrepancies. Here is my start. Please add any additional info you have come across and a link. I'll be out for a bit but back a bit later to check in on the thread.

FEBRUARY 26

At shortly before 7:15, George Zimmerman spots Trayvon standing outside the development's clubhouse near the community mailboxes, where the teen had ducked under an awning to get out of the rain. Zimmerman calls police on a non-emergency number from his SUV, saying he sees a suspicious person.

When Trayvon leaves the clubhouse, Zimmerman pursues him in his car.

Trayvon is talking on his cell phone to his 16-year-old girlfriend in Miami. She says Trayvon tells her someone is following him. He sounds nervous.

Trayvon goes off the road to walk between two rows of town homes, down the lane from his destination, Zimmerman gets out of his car and pursues him on foot. He tells the dispatcher "oh shit, he's running." the dispatcher asks if he is pursuing the subject. When Zimmerman says he is, the dispatcher says, "we don't need you to do that."

They don't get far. Just around the back lane, Trayvon is confronted by the stranger in a red jacket and jeans - he's not dressed like a police officer.

Trayvon's girlfriend is still on the phone. When Zimmerman got closer to Martin, she told her boyfriend to run, but Martin told her that he was not going to run.

"What are you stopping me for?" Martin asked Zimmerman, according to the girl.

"What are you doing around here?" Zimmerman asked in response.

The girl said she then got the impression that an altercation was taking place and that someone had pushed Martin, because the headset fell out of his ear, and the phone shut off.

At approximately 7:16, the first 911 call is placed to police by an alarmed neighbor, who reports hearing a fight going on in their backyard. It was followed in rapid succession by five more calls to the emergency number.

Neighbor #1, male: "I just heard a shot right behind my house. They’re wrestling right in the back of my porch." [The sound} was either that or a rock at the window, I don’t know, the guy’s yelling “help” and I’m not going outside... I'm, I’m pretty sure the guy’s dead out here – holy sh*t! Oh, my God! ...Um, there’s a guy with a flashlight in the backyard now. I think there’s flashlights, and there’s a guy – I don’t know if that’s a cop... There’s two guys. There’s two guys in the backyard with flashlights and there’s a black guy down and it looks like he’s been shot and he’s dead. He’s laying and there’s multiple people calling."


Neighbor #2, female: "There’s just someone screaming outside [screaming can be heard]...It sounds like a male...I think they’re yelling “help” but I don’t know. Just send someone please, crap...I can’t see him and I don’t want to go out there, I don’t know what’s going on. [Screams can be heard]...Just, there’s gunshots... [He's] pretty much out the back deck...He’s behind my house...

Neighbor #3, female:"There’s someone screaming outside...I heard a gunshot – hurry up...There’s someone screaming – I just heard gunshots [caller frantic]...Hurry up, they’re right outside my house...I just heard screaming and gun shots...No, I don’t hear any more [gunshots]...A male [was screaming]...Oh, my God! The guy on top has a white t-shirt...I just looked out my window and the guy on top has a white t-shirt...I couldn’t see the other thing. I couldn’t see the person he was on...I don’t know – I came to the phone and called you...I couldn’t tell [the person on tops ethnicity], it was completely dark."

Neighbor #4, female: "I’m at [edited] and someone’s yelling two doors down from me, screaming, hollering ‘help, help, help.’ There’s an elderly man that lives down here. I don’t know what happened and then I thought I heard like a gunshot inside...one shot...Just like, I just heard it. When I heard that I picked up the phone and called you...I live [edited] and I’m inside by my large sliding glass door and there’s somebody out in the back porch, I mean, two doors down there’s an elderly man that lives there. Somebody walking around with a flashlight. I don’t know who it is. Maybe the police are already here, I don’t know because someone’s out there with a flashlight. And I did hear something …[The voice] sounded to me like a male, OK, and what I know is this neighbor since I’ve been here four years, there’s an elderly man that lives like 1, 2, 3, 4 doors down north of me. And I’m inside... I’m sitting by my back sliding glass door. There's someone out there right now. I don’t see anything but their flashlights shining around. But I did hear someone yelling ‘help, help, help’ or something like that. Oh my God or something, and then moaning and then I heard a “boom” and I picked up the phone and I called...[did not hear a vehicle leaving] because I’m in the back, and the back is like there’s just a walkway, there’s no – I mean if somebody was in the front in a car, I don’t know. But as far as the back here I did not hear any kind of vehicle, no."

Neighbor #5, female: "I think someone’s been shot...Because they’re out in the backyard and a gun just went off and they said call 911. Now there’s people coming with flashlights...[There's someone laying on the ground] and there’s people around them now... it’s a black guy...

Neighbor #6/Anderson Cooper's Anonymous Witness, female: "I’m looking out my deck of my townhome and I heard someone screaming “help” and I don’t know, I heard like a bang...My townhome. Yes, I’m looking out my window of my backyard and someone is yelling and screaming “help” and I heard a pop noise and they’re both still out there right now and I don’t know what’s going on...Oh, my God! I see the person right now. I see him like walking. There’s a man coming out, there’s people coming out with flashlights. Oh, my God! I don’t know what he did to this person. I can’t see, there’s a man walking with a flashlight right now...I guess [the voice was] a man, I don’t know. The man is up right now and someone’s coming over...I can see out my back window and there’s a sidewalk and grass and stuff. [Inaudible] There’s a man who’s out there with a flashlight with a man who’s been wrestling …[The person laying down is] on the grass. Oh, my God. People are coming, there’s another gentleman with a flashlight. I don’t know if they’re police or not. Oh, my God, he’s shot, he shot the person. He said he shot the person...a guy is waving his hands up saying he shot a person. I can see a police officer that’s with him right now...I didn’t see it because it was too dark and I just heard people screaming ‘help me, help me.’ And this person shot him. He was like wrestling with him, you know what I mean? On the ground, from what I could see, it was very dark...I was watching my TV [inaudible] my back window and I heard people talking out there and I was kind of like ‘oh, gosh, with the pouring rain, why would they be outside. I figured walking their dog or something. And then I heard more talking voices and I didn’t open my window and then I just, it looked like I saw two men talking to each other. It looked like they were wrestling each other and then I heard the man saying ‘help, help’

Neighbor #7/Witness Austin Brown: "I saw a man laying on the ground and he was held down screaming and I was gonna go over there and try to help him but my dog ran off the leash so I went and got my dog and then I heard a loud sound and then the screaming stopped. No, [do not know the person who was shot or see the person who had the gun] I just heard a loud gunshot sound and then the screaming stopped."

- Mary Cutcher was in her kitchen making coffee that night with her roommate, Selma Mora Lamilla. The window was open, she said. "We heard a whining. Not like a crying, boohoo, but like a whining, someone in distress, and then the gunshot," she said. They looked out the window but saw nothing. It was dark. They ran out the sliding glass door, and within seconds, they saw Zimmerman. "Zimmerman was standing over the body with -- basically straddling the body with his hands on Trayvon's back," Cutcher said. "And it didn't seem to me that he was trying to help him in any way. I didn't hear any struggle prior to the gunshot. "And I feel like it was Trayvon Martin that was crying out, because the minute that the gunshot went off, the whining stopped." The two women said they could not see whether Zimmerman was bruised or hurt. It was too dark. "Selma asked him three times, 'what's going on over there?' " Cutcher said. "He looks back and doesn't say anything. She asks him again, 'everything OK? What's going on?' Same thing: looked at us, looked back. Finally, the third time, he said, 'just call the police.' " Then I saw him with his hands over his head in the universal sign of: ‘Oh man, I messed up.' The women, who were the first on the scene, said they saw Zimmerman pacing back and forth. “I know what I heard. I heard a cry and a shot,” Mora said. “If there was a fight, it did not happen here where the boy was shot. I would have heard it, as this all happened right outside my open window.” The women think there may well have been a physical altercation between the two, but it must have taken place in a different spot, where Zimmerman perhaps had a chance to compose himself and draw his weapon. Sanford police tell reporters Cutcher's original police interview backs up Zimmerman's version but she vehemently denies this.

- A witness who asked not to be identified, even by gender, told CNN's Anderson Cooper about hearing voices outside in an area where neighborhood residents often walk their dogs and wondering, "Oh, my gosh, who's out there walking their dog in the rain?" Then the witness heard a "very loud, predominant voice" and opened the window. "I couldn't hear the words, but it was like, OK, this is not a regular conversation. This is someone aggressively, you know, yelling at someone." The witness recalled seeing two men on the grass, one on top of the other. "And at that point, not looking out the window, I heard the yell for help, one yell for help, and then I heard another ... excruciating type of yell," the witness said. "It didn't almost sound like 'help.' It just sounded so painful. But I wasn't watching out the window during that. And then the next time I looked out the window, there's the same thing: two men on the grass, one on top of each other. I couldn't see a lot of movement. It was very dark, but I felt like they were scuffling. And then I heard the gunshots, which, to me, were more like pops than they were like a bang." The witness recalled hearing more than one shot. "It definitely was more than one pop noise, so I don't know if it was an echo or anything else. But it definitely made more than one pop." Then one of the men, who appeared to be Hispanic, started walking toward the witness' vantage point, the witness said. Zimmerman is Hispanic. "He didn't appear hurt or anything else," the witness said.

- 13 year old Austin Brown went out to walk his dog near where Trayvon was shot. “I saw someone lying on the ground, and I heard screaming. I don’t know that it was the person on the [ground] who was screaming, but to me it sounded like a kid who was crying." Austin wasn’t sure if the person was in a fight or had slipped and gotten hurt. Austin’s boxer puppy got off the leash so the boy went chasing after the dog and lost sight of the scene for a moment. Then, he heard a gun go off. Eight days later officers interview him and he reports that the man on the bottom "might" have been wearing red. His mother later tells reporters she felt the officers were pressuring her son.

- One person has told police he saw a man lying on the ground calling for help with an attacker on top of him. The witness, identified only as “John,” told Tampa Bay Fox affiliate WTVT-TV last week: “The guy on the bottom who had a red sweater on was yelling to me: ‘help, help.’”


A 7:17 p.m., the first officer, Officer Smith, arrives at the gated complex, responding to Zimmerman's 911 call. In his report, he says that as he arrives, dispatchers notified him of the 911 calls reporting shots fired in the area. Officer Smith says that while canvassing the area, he came upon Zimmerman, bleeding from his nose and the back of his head, standing near Trayvon's body. Zimmerman told the officer he had shot the person lying face down in the grass, and that he was still armed. The officer handcuffs Zimmerman, and removed a Kel Tek 9mm PF9 semi-automatic handgun from Zimmerman's waistband. According to Smith's report, a second officer, Officer Ayala, arrives and tries to take vital signs from the young man lying on the grass. More officers arrive as Zimmerman was placed in the back of Smith's patrol car and given first aid. A Sergeant Raimondo attempts to get a pulse on the young man, and when that fails, he and Ayala turn the teen over and attempted CPR and chest compressions. Nothing works. Zimmerman tells police he killed Martin in self defense. The police do not administer a drug or alcohol test. Zimmerman is transported to Sanford police Department 35 minutes after shooting.

There was literally only a little over a minute/under 2 minutes between Zimmerman's 911 call and the shooting itself.

I really, really want to hear about the bullet trajectory.
