Pregnant woman sentenced to death for marrying Christian

KHARTOUM, SUDAN—A pregnant Sudanese woman who married a Christian man was sentenced to death Thursday after she refused to recant her Christian faith, her lawyer said.

Meriam Ibrahim, whose father was Muslim but mother was an Orthodox Christian from Ethiopia, was convicted of “apostasy” on Sunday and given four days to repent and escape death, lawyer Al-Shareef Ali al-Shareef Mohammed said.

The 26 year old, who is eight months pregnant, was sentenced after that grace period expired, Mohammed said.

Amnesty International immediately condemned the sentence, calling it “abhorrent.” Mohammed called the conviction rushed and legally flawed since the judge refused to hear key defence witnesses and ignored constitutional provisions on freedom of worship and equality among citizens.

1. And where are the "moderate" Muslim voices?

I know they are out there. I have a good number of Muslim friends and acquaintances both here in the U.S. and abroad who are highly educated, travel widely and consider Sharia law and Islamic extremism an insult and perversion of their faith.

Whether it is the young woman in Aceh province in Indonesia who "allegedly" committed adultery and who was then systematically raped by a gang of young men and then sentenced to be stoned to death for her "sin" to this case of failing to respect the most intimate religious beliefs of a young woman.....this s**t has to stop.

As I posted about the situation in Aceh province, they were totally devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami a number of years ago. The U.S. and other countries poured millions into relief efforts to bring them fresh water, food, bulldozers to help clear areas, search and recovery for bodies, etc.

I have to say if they think Sharia law is so great then the next time they call for help we not answer. Let them get help from Allah. Let's see if he sends in ships, helicopters and trained medical and other personnel to help them. I suspect he won't.

Other religions do cause atrocities too, but many fewer per capita nowadays.

Which is little different than atrocities done in the name of politics, or nationalism, or economics, or a host of imaginary concepts we both base our lives on and to a great extent, allow to control our lives.

In the end, they are all atrocities, regardless of what or how we justify them.

If so, we should pull everything from there and any other shithole that abuses their people.

Is this a case of someone abusing the name of Islam to terrorize the people or is it the real deal?

The only thing the Sudanese are allowed to sell to the US is gum arabic. The Sudanese government has been very corrupt for a very long time.

It is the only way we can make sure our corporations are free

I wonder why some are so concerned with the fundies in other countries while the ones right here continue to fuck up our country?

Or... maybe I know exactly why.

again. And then you will feel liberate to launch a tirade. I rather doubt that the act in question will equate to a death sentence for marrying someone of a different faith, but what the fuck ... you have a point to make, right?
