In fact, EPB is one of nine publicly-owned communications networks in Tennessee.
In addition to EPB Fiber Optics, entities include those in the following areas:

• Bristol

• Clarksville

• Columbia

of Eastern Tennessee joined the Union cause during the Civil War... there are rumors that part of the Underground Railroad went through Cades Cove, as well as some other places, through the Great Smoky Mountains. There were groups who snuck into North Carolina and raided confederate camps and enclaves. Many people in many parts of the South were Pro Union/Anti-Confederate.

Of the nine cities in TN which have a taxpayer funded Internet Jackson is in West TN which predominately fought for the South, Clarksville is in Northern Middle TN, Columbia and Pulaski are in South Middle TN. Pulaski was the hometown of the original KKK.

Memphis in West TN even tried it and failed, I believe a taxpayer funded Internet will spread throughout the state.

I also believe the Internet should be a public utility, state and nationwide, there are too many monopolies controlling or trying to control the free flow of information.

I'm learning so much about my birth state. I only travel back there about once a year and then only hear from the wingers down there, so your post gives me hope.

We've purchased acreage in the foothills of the beautiful Smokies and plan to build a retirement home there in a couple of yrs. The beauty of those hills and mtns. trumps the wing-nuttery of the area. Give me trails, a good friend, a great dog, and a few bears for company and I'm happy.

I hope that post was not sarcasm but since I cannot trust my instinct this evening, I don't know. I'm barely functioning on less than 3 hrs sleep in the last 24 - trying, rather unsuccessfully, to kick a sleeping pill habit, so I'm quite sleep deprived and what few brains cells I have left aren't sparking on all cylinders, to use a mechanical metaphor. Besides, I'm not sure if you know me.

Anyway, thanks.

but it was only a reaction to my wingnut relatives in ETn whom I've had to deal with recently. Believe me, I'm very happy to learn of any progressive measures anywhere in the state, such as this one:

Feb. 3, 2014. Gov. Haslam proposed waiving community college tuition for all high school graduates.

Democrats in the South but it seems it's just the racist rednecks that make the news. There's also this:

For a period of nearly five decades in the 20th century, the Tennessee Democratic Party held the Tennessee governorship continuously. However, since 1967 no two successive governors have belonged to the same party.

In the decades before the Civil War, Blount County, Tennessee, was a hotbed of abolitionist activity. The Manumission Society of Tennessee was active in the county as early as 1815, and the Quakers— who were relatively numerous in Blount at the time— were so vehemently opposed to slavery that they fought alongside the Union army, in spite of their pacifist agenda.[33] The founder of Maryville College, Rev. Isaac Anderson, was a staunch abolitionist who often gave sermons in Cades Cove. Blount doctor Calvin Post (1803–1873) was believed to have set up an Underground Railroad stop within the cove in the years preceding the war.[33] With such sentiment and influence, it's no surprise that Cades Cove remained staunchly pro-Union,

Hope that helps! (The whole wiki is an interesting read). You can also just google "Cades Cove" and find many interesting links about the place and activities if you ever visit for a vacation.

40 Mbp/s download / 20 Mbps upload $49.95

...how you say it's 'owned by taxpayers'. The EPB (Electric Power Board) is the power company there - assume it's like, or is, a REM (Rural Electric Membership)...and is publicly-owned only in that regard. Their customers pay about the same for their service (oh yeah, they also provide 'cable TV' over the network) as most of us do for Comcast, AT&T, Time-Warner, etc...and they aren't 50-times faster - their download speeds are about 30 mbs - the same thing I get from AT&T and my daughter's family gets from Comcast...so what's your point?

That’s why we’ve slashed the price of our 1 Gigabit speed package (1,000 Mbps) to just $69.99/month. Or choose our 100 Mbps package, still super-fast, for just $57.99/month.

https://epbfi.com/internet/

I pay $60 for the fastest Charter offers,30 mbs. What they have in Chattanooga is 33 times faster for 10 bucks more.
